Philippines is a lot of fun, easy VISA for ex servicemen, 5 year VISA if you marry a local girl. Booze is extremely cheap, the girls are beautiful and very friendly and almost everyone speaks English. Loads of Brits, Americans and Australians living there. Some areas are a bit iffy (inner city), but that's the same the world over.
I worked with someone from India who said he was having a mansion built there and was moving in when he retired. He got fired before he retired so not sure if he went back early or got another job here.
That's not really an option for most Americans. Unless you're wealthy you are trapped in the US for the most part. That's what makes it so insidious that people can just walk into the US and set up shop. Americans can't do that anywhere without being arrested and jailed. I guess it's part of our "privilege".
There are a lot of US guys living in the PI on their SS checks of around $1,000 a month. Although to be really comfortable I would say $1,500 to be safe (I'm managing with a family to support on around $1,200 a month). I don't consider myself wealthy.
Yes, I am aware that some folks seem to be able to survive in Costa Rica on a meager retirement. I didn't mean to infer it was "impossible", just that for most Americans it simply won't be happening. Watching events in PI, I doubt I'd feel safe there in the long run. I always figured the Americans living there were ex-military living large on a pension AD social security. Central America also has its hostile moments. The real shame though is even contemplating having to flee the US.
Yes, I am soooooo going to do that I think, instantly double/triple your money My country is an over priced nanny state
I have a Columbian friend who said when he found out how much jobs pay here he was thinking he was going to easily become rich and maybe move back. He apparently wasn't told the costs of things like rent and insurance and pretty much everything else compared to back home.
You can live cheap and save if you really want. Share a room, use the bus, etc. It's your savings that count.
jesus fucking christ, what happened to this place? You can waive an American flag around anywhere just fine with the exception of the countries with a large population that hates America. Quit collectively pissing everyone off and you might have less of a gripe about the dangers of doing so. When it comes to people in the states, let them waive whatever flag they want, that's the joy of free democracies. Be it a gay pride flag, an atheist flag, a Canadian flag, a republican flag, a legalize it flag. People waive the flag of the movements they support, maybe they waive their Mexican flag out of pride that even 2nd world country has a better medical system than the richest country in the world.
If you think warm receptiveness to other cultures show America's being 'limp-wristed', you don't understand strength. And being nostalgic to your home country while loving your new country isn't a dichotomy. And if you've ever lived in a different society, it can be very isolating. Someone waving their flag too is a way of acclimating to a different culture. If you can't empathize with that, why disdain it? Yes, their are some countries where it's risky to wave an American flag. Those countries are empirically worse than ours. For that reason.
It's Colombia brother. I think that's the extra 'U' Irminisul was ranting about. I've stayed there for 5 months. Beautiful country. It's more of a middle inexpensive country though. Not super cheap like Central America or Ecuador. Electronics are way more expensive than in the States. You could make a killing smuggling IPhone's into Colombia.
Well that's weird. Parents usually encourage their children to learn other languages. Wtf, it's not a big deal.
don't worry about who doesn't like you, because no matter who you are, no matter what you do, there will always be someone who doesn't. and always some who does too. because there are just that ridiculously many people. and whatever anyone tries to pretend to the contrary, we're all individually different, and yes, we are supposed to be, born to be, however you want to say it, wherever we're born, or live, and whatever we believe or believe in. the whole thing of popularity is a load of crap. sure numbers count if your running for public office or running a business, but other then that, its nothing to feel anything about. there is no normal. there is only more or less of consideration. and the more each of us, take into consideration, as much as we can, of ALL things, the better and more enjoyable of a world we will each have to live in. and the less we do so, the worse we make it.
