I've recently found that ammonia and salt seem to work as well or a it better. It is more dangerous, and you should be careful, but just saying, if you have it, it works well. Or using both one after the other seems to work best.

 

Now that you have cleaned it you know what your responsibility is now...

"Back in the day," I had a nice one I made from excess lab glassware. It was an exotic beast! Instead of tepid tap water, I'd fill it with ice water. It gave me the coolest smoke, no burning harshness at all. I had access to the solvent cabinet and could selectively dissolve any residue and clean it till it shined! (Oh yeah, then there was the non-denatured ethanol for "research purposes." Yeah, right!).
