While I feel that one should get most of their vitamins and minerals from food, there are a few I find to be especially important, since many people are deficient in certain nutrients due to soil depletion, lack of sunlight, etc.. Here are my top six: Vitamin D (as in D3 - cholecalciferol) - Most people not living near the equator are not getting adequate amounts of sunlight, and the further away one lives from the equator, the more likely they are to be grossly deficient in this vital hormone. That's right, contrary to popular belief, vitamin D is actually classified as a steroid hormone -- not a vitamin -- and it acts as a substrate for sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen, as well as human growth hormone (HGH). It is hugely important for proper immune function and is essential for healthy bones. It has been found to be a powerful aid in guarding against heart disease and cancer. Recent studies have shown doses much higher than traditionally recommended to be beneficial, and doses as high as 10,000-15,000IU per day have been found to be safe. However, the optimal dosage is around 1,000IU per 25 lbs of body weight. I personally take 8,000IU per day. Magnesium - This is a mineral that most of the population is deficient in due to soil depletion. Magnesium is used in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. It is also needed for the proper transcription of DNA and RNA. Deficiency is magnesium poses a serious problem because it is associated with headaches, muscle cramps, insomnia, nausea, metabolic syndrome, and a host of other ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, obesity and asthma. Magnesium is a powerful natural relaxant and works great when used to treat anxiety disorders and problems with sleep. It is very hard to take too much magnesium since it is water soluble. Doses vary from person to person, but bowel tolerance is the best way to gauge dose, and up to 800-1,000mg daily is fine for most people. Iodine - Iodine is important for proper thyroid function and metabolism. Iodine deficiency is widespread, and the amount found in table salt is not nearly enough needed for proper thyroid function. There are many different forms of iodine supplementation, but I prefer elemental iodine in the form of Lugol's (2%) solution, which I use 9 drops of per day divided up in to three doses. Iodine supplementation has been found to be associated with increased metabolism and energy, increased cognitive function, and fluoride detoxification. It also destroys pathogens like mold, fungi, parasites and malaria. If one was to develop food poisoning, they could easily stop it in its tracks with an adequate dose of iodine. Yet how many people are aware of this? Since I started supplementing with iodine, I have noticed a huge difference in the way I feel, especially in terms of energy levels and cognitive function. Iodine has lifted the brain fog I used to suffer from and has allowed me to think more clearly. Vitamin K2 - K2 has a synergistic effect when used with vitamin D, and helps to prevent vitamin D toxicity when used in higher doses. Unless you regularly eat grass-fed beef or consume raw dairy, it is highly likely you are deficient in K2, which is important for calcium metabolism, since too much calcium leads to calcification of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. This is why K2 has been found to prevent heart attacks, as well as strengthens bones. Vitamin C - Despite being readily found in fruits and vegetables, approximately 30% of the population is deficient in this vitamin. This is one of the safest vitamins, and can be taken in very high doses with immense benefits relating to its powerful antioxidant and immune building properties. Vitamin C is used by the body to manufacture glutathione, which is the most powerful antioxidant in the body. Recent studies have been found extremely high doses of vitamin C to cure certain forms of cancer. I myself use 5,000-10,000mg (5-10 grams) of vitamin C daily, and I prefer it in powdered form. I recommend Solaray's vitamin C powder, which provides 5,000mg per serving. Krill oil - Krill oil is far superior to fish oil because it contains astaxanthin, which is a powerful antioxidant. Krill oil is also more stable than fish oil and is phosphorylated, which means its easier for your brain to assimilate. Krill oil reduces inflammation in the body, improves brain function, and helps to enhance muscle growth. While krill is lower in EPA and DHA than fish oil, it has antioxidant properties that the latter does not, and it is shown that the human body only needs about 350mg of each per day for optimal brain function. Finding a high-quality krill oil is essential. I recommend Source Natural's NKO (Neptune Krill Oil) and Jarrow krill oil.
