Don't let it get you down. 99% of the world believe you are wrong in your beliefs (and that they are right) - and some of them are even nice loveable people.

It's difficult, but if you are able to respond to them with peace and love then you kinda prove your side of the argument. Don't sink down to their level.

It also helps to scream a lot when there's no one around ;-)

He already went that low and lower, by cursing at his grandparents...

hippies believe in peace and love until they encounter an opinion they dont agree with.

Always pulling out the "hippie hypocrite" card, aren't you? ;)
Maryanne's right - it happens in all groups of people, not just hippies.

However, it is more noticable - BECAUSE hippies are supposed to be openminded. Kinda like with the Christian Church today. Their hypocrisy stands out because they are supposed to be one way and in effect become what they condemn. The process of condemning is hypocritical too...

why do people my age think that they will actualy change the adluts opion? It will only break into a fight. To avoid fighting I keep my real thoughts and feelings secret from my parents. Its for the famliy's own good.

They have lived through things that you can't even imagine from your privileged life. Do without sometime and you might come to appreciate material possesions as well. As you grow up some you will realize that some of the things you thought you were against just aren't so black and white. You will maintain some of your beliefs and you will be amazed how stupidly simplistic you thought about some things. Whatever the case IMO it is never cool for you to bad mouth or put down your Grandparents just because they don't agree with you. Unfortunately they are right/wrong about things, as we all are.

THEY are the ones that fucked up, not him. So they are the ones who should apologize.

Always nice to start a hypocrite argument - BUT I was not talking about Peace and Love in relation to hippies. I was talking about Peace and Love in relation to "The Morrocan Raccoon" being a buddhist. A lot of buddhism is effectively a manual for how to live your live and be happy and effective - and how to avoid falling into the traps of conflicts like this. Let "Right Thought" be your guide ;-)

I'm kind of a secular buddhist myself.

    Peace, Love and Truth!!

p.s. You don't have to be mad to worship here - but it helps.

Always nice to start an argument on hypocrisy... BUT I wasn't talking about Peace and Love as it relates to hippies but on how it relates to Buddhists (such as our friend The Morrocan Raccoon). A lot of Buddhism is really about how to live your life and be happy and effective and not to fall into the easy traps of conflicts like this. Thus the term "Right Thought".

    Three rules of life:
    1. Peace & Love = Happiness
    2. Happiness = Peace & Love
    3. You don't need any other rules

    keep working at it!!

To quote the all-wise Paul Rodriguez, "It's tough to be a man, baby!". If this is how you react to newspaper recycling, I shudder to think what you'll do if someone forgets to replace the toilet paper roll. You kinda proved their point about your maturity with the way you handled this one, Davy Crockett. What do you think now?

oh gosh (moroccan) i know how you feel--with my stepdad usually ( not about recycling, tho) (i've had it with grandparents, but it's different). i hate how he brings me down sometimes and having care about stuff other than politics and money and shit and suddenly we're stupid kids who are worthless....)it's usually somethings totally stupid that he blows up out of proportion)

sometimes with grandparents, as much as i love them, recycling and such are less important to them (and other people) and they hate me for telling them stuff. well, anyway, i understand how you feel. you can't change everybody, you can try, but sometimes you just gotta clean up the litter yourself...

The grandparents sound very misinformed, particularly in their views on buddhism. The rest is subjective. They come from a different era, they've probably been looking down upon others all their lives, never seeing others as true equals. I feel sorry for them, they must be miserable human beings.

my grandparents don't say mean things like that to me, but i know they think it and may say it behind my back. i visit every summer and just recently found out that my grandma has problems with me being vegetarian (i have been since i was 8), and now there's NO way i'm telling her i'm vegan. she seems to have a hard time accepting things that she has little experience dealing with. my grandpa used to make fun of the clothes i wore, but it's gotten better, i think. all i have to remember is to respect my elders. i sure expect respect from my grandkids!:)

my advice to you is to try and ignore it as best as possible. they don't have as much life left in them as we liek to think, and we should always treasure what they have to teach us. this is getting really corny:) but i'm sorry your grandparents treat you like that, i hope you can find some way to have a better relationship with them.
