My thought is if the other person has appeared to have simply erred in judgement but now understands the error and vows to not repeat it then the likelihood of the wronged allowing a second chance (with scrutiny) has increased.

It's pretty hard trying to remember everything in the past - fully and completely accurately just isn't a thing.
