have you never heard of "art for art's sake" ? meaning is relative. people find their own meanings in everything, and that is what makes good art - allowing people to come up with their own meanings what the hell would be the point of looking at something or reading something or listening to something that tells you how you ought to feel when looking, reading, or listening to it? in the end, how much can the artist's original meaning really matter to you? people like art becomes it means something to them, not because of what it means to the artist
you remind me of the great of Montreal song "art snob solutions" and that is why i would never ever go to an art school or music school or anything of the sort. obviously going there has made you hate art, or so it seems.... sorry but bullshitting can be an art even if your teachers teach you otherwise
how many times do I have to repeat the same fucking thing lemme type it nice and big BY DEFINITION ART MUST BE EXPRESSING A THOUGHT OR FEELING it doesn't matter if the viewer understnads that thought or feeling or not but if there was no thought or feeling meant, it is not art how the fuck can you people keep arguing this, completely avoiding my point?
I definently agree with that part but then the original product is still not art and the whole rest of your post made you seem like a total prick that was assuming way too much abotu her situation (which is exactly what I am assuming you are)
can you give any examples of art that don't hold some sort of meaning to the original artist? this thread just doesn't matter. anything anybody makes is going to mean something to them. even its made as a joke or half-heartedly... it can end up as something with so many underlying meanings of which the artist was just not aware at the time of making it.
say my art teacher tells me to paint a still-life. she sets up the still life for me. i dont want to paint the still life but do it anyway, as realisticly as possiable, for a grade. it obviously does not express a feeing or though... it was just done because i was told to... is my still-life not art? of course are does not need a meaning...
I personally would not call that art but could see that considered as art since you were trying to recreate the image in a different form (from your sight to the painting)
but what if i told you that exact same painting was me expressing the energy i felt from my still life subjects... then it would be art? and how would anybody ever know the difference?
most of it doesn't. whether or not it affects you in some way is also 'in the eye of the beholder', but it IS the last, rather then 'meaning', that art criticism defines as a defining art. =^^= .../\...
Eh...If the creator of the thing says that the thing in question is art...well, then I guess its art At least, its art to the artist. Art is whatever the artist wishes it to be, and whatever you think it is. Heh. I think that there shouldnt be any set definition of what "art" truly is, in any case >.>
Have you ever wondered what that question is asking? What do you understand by the word "meaning"? Are you talking about some kind of allegorical plot or perhaps some symbolic nuance to do with the state of the world. I dont understand what you are asking as the term "meaning" is far from clear in that sense. Art ???? Meaning ????? There is a vast amount of debate about the two terms anyway -Is art what gallery owners tell us is art? If you say "Oh this art has a lot of meaning" isnt that saying first of all that you believe what you are talking about is a work of art - others may disagree - then - you say it has meaning - others may disagree - its not a clear cut question until you yourself have a definition for what a work of art is - and for what the term "meaning" implies - surely meaning is a subjective imposition that you place upon the work of art - whatever you say about a painting really says more about you than the painting doesnt it ?
Lets all just enjoy art (whatever the heck it is xD), and not waste time on debating with eachother its true meaning. Just enjoy the dang art O.O
why? most of the fun about art is deciding whether something is a work of art or not How can I enjoy it if its not a work of art - who says something is a work of art or not?
If an artist farts loudly while on a podium in an art gallery, in an exhibition called, an artist farts, is that art? Does that have a meaning? An artist decides if something is a work of art and you either agree with them or do not agree, but you will never know what the work means to the artist, and will not therefore know if the work has a meaning other than what the artist says is the meaning
i think that is what is so great with art. there doesn't need to be a meaning. there is no such thing as right/wrong. it all involves the inner self and self expression that makes it so unique and original in every piece. it's just appealing and beautiful and that alone makes it meaningful.. but only to one self, of course. =)
all art is sacred. it doesn't have to be anything you want it to be and it can be everything you want it to be. you just gotta let it out.
