try some electronic music. it's really good, even if you still assume its all the stereotypical 'club dance' try some drum n bass or some techno, or jungle if you're into more hip-hop type stuff. it's the future of music, i guess you could say.| http://youtube.com/watch?v=p6B6nDvKXMM&feature=related - drum n bass http://youtube.com/watch?v=AUCn_qDwtl8 - drum n bass http://youtube.com/watch?v=n22iVddBx9w - hard style/ hard house
folk punk's my bag, but i listen to everything (xcept metal where you cannot hear a note change or lyrics) it was hard trying to find this style of music in my early years, but i found that i find most of my music from just going to local gigs, whatever genre, cuz they're all influenced by something reggae's pretty cool too
Not true... though most of the good music is not mainstream... it just takes alittle looking beofre you find the gold.
I agree....I'm blessed with a wonderful local music scene in Minnesota right now. Maybe go to a festival or a few live shows, you're bound to find something that you love. Also, if you're just looking to something to listen to, check out pandora.com I can't figure out how to link to my "station" but you can pick from genre's and artists there. Good luck, keep looking.....there's a ton of great music in the world today. eace:
Yeah. I've seen some good blues groups at local festivals this summer for free. It's more enjoyable than what is being marketed on the charts. These groups aren't nationally known but they have talent. .
Hip Hop is definitely the music of this generation. And that's a good thing. Like one said up there, look for GOOD hiphop. Common is a genius with metaphors Talib Kweli is an all around BEAST with verbals Lupe Fiasco has some of the best flow around Then you have beats made by Hi-Tek and Kanye West. The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest are some of my favorite groups to dance to. People putting down HipHop PROBABLY haven't listened to actual good stuff that you wont hear on the radio. I used to hate it too, I used to think it was no talent whatsoever and just garbage. I was introduced to Common and everything changed
yes, i do like the hip hop music k'naan is a champ, i like what ive heard of lupe and kanye common is quite good aswell hip hop has a big scene in australia and some of it deserve to be where they are unfortunately, some are just booty shakers and not in for the music the herd are really political and are a great listen bliss n eso are another good aussie band
You should try a different radio station. I guarantee there is more out there than rap and emo music.
i love older bands as well: the beatles, the dead, moody blues, jefferson airplane/starship etc.. however, there is plenty of great music coming out of this era...please tell us what kind of music you like, maybe we can help. even give us names of old bands you like and perhaps that will help us help you By the way nice signature picture...i have that poster in my room
I enjoy some of the music out there today http://youtube.com/watch?v=TF3ifE2rxTc But for the most part I find myself listening to Billy Preston, and other artists of the 1970’s. When you grow up in the 1980s you have to search elsewhere for quality music http://youtube.com/watch?v=podVGuZS6g8 http://youtube.com/watch?v=UW5TY4CzW2k http://youtube.com/watch?v=NSBT81E5oiM Hotwater
Preston was on the Nat King Cole show back in the mid 60s when he was about 12 years old. He was playing a song he wrote on the organ. I still have that show somewhere on one of my discs. .
I fucking hate emo bands. Everyone thinks that because i wear black and have long hair that im emo but i wouldn't be caught dead listening to that crap.
modern bands that I like: The Ark [they're a pop-rock band from sweden with a gay lead singer... they rock. haha] The Format Muse HIM [they started in like, '95] Red Hot Chili Peppers [they had their 25 year anniversary in the spring, though.] System of a Down [started in 98] so that's like new-ish. has anyone seen metro station? good god.
Haha, pwned by your own generation. Trust me, you'll remember it. Last night we were at a party reminiscing about nu-metal, and everyone fucking HATED that when it was around the first time. Plus whiny teenage emo is better on every level than the fucking Ting Tings.
If you want a good modern band, maybe check out: Ex Models Make Believe Maps & Atlases This Town Needs Guns Funeral Diner Erase Errata Old Time Relijun LCD Soundsystem The Paper Chase At The Drive-In The Mars Volta (although they're not so great these days, their last album was pretty okay) ... loads more, basically. A lot of these have been established for a while, but hey, so what? Decent bands have staying power. Sonic Youth can still run rings round most bands; even their B-sides and rareties kick the shit out of bands half their age. You just need to dig a bit deeper. The mainstream media never cover anything that requires more than a cursory listen to digest. I mean, The Killers for god's sake! It's not until you go through channels that are for music lovers rather than just consumers that you're going to find out about anything that rewards repeated listens. Fact is, you don't need bands to represent your generation. Half the time you're just being sold imitators of old bands anyway. Most of the cool "new" bands the press are pushing aren't really much different from the old post-punk bands, which kinda ruins it because at least the first time around they were trying to do something new. But there's nothing wrong with going back through musical history till you find something worthwhile. That's why I'm still listening to "Pink Flag" even though it was made 10 years before I was born!
Quit being so small-minded. There IS music out there right now, it's just underground. Just like the 80's. People always forget about that decade, for whatever reason. Look up Dead Meadow, that's a great band I'm sure you'll like if you're all over 70's music. That's totally true. Pretty much any band that has ever been popular at any time has been massively derivative, from Led Zeppelin then to Coldplay now. (Led Zeppelin was a lot better though)
Innovation is possible though. It's only really a matter of ripping off two or three bands instead of one, but so few actually bother.
There's always been cheesy, crappy commercial music that the masses eat up like the McDonald's dollar menu. Every generation says the same old thing. The new music isn't music. And then what do they list as "real"? Usually pure middle-of-the-road, smarmy shit. There was contrived garbage in the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc. etc., the only difference being that the contrived garbage of the past is no longer in circulation, for the most part, although you'll still hear dogshit like The Monkees every day on Oldies stations. So whenever a Baby Boomer starts harping on about the good old days, let us not forget, the shit was flowing then too. And it was bad. Hip-hop, perhaps, gets the short end of the stick. But this is our music, and our soul. Whether it's the cheesy fake drums and materialism in hip-hop, or the god-awful alt-pop on country stations, the thing to remember is that we own these art forms. The best they can do is try to approximate it, and sell it back to us. They will never be at the source. We are the originators, and the good stuff neverhits the radio. Even the good stuff of old still never hits the radio. When was the last time you heard "The Soft Parade" on FM radio? Or anything other than the standard 2 or 3 songs they are allowed to play of each artist?
