they should just re-name MTV. It's not music television anymore. This new generation who watches The Hills and all that crap really won't care if you rename Music TV to another name. maybe rename it CTV = Crappy Television

 

MTV is pure shit. What ever happened to ''music'' television? All they show now is dating shows and reality drama shows.

And by watching MTV, you're not only frying your brain, but you're also conforming to society and supporting those slutty shows they constantly play 24/7.

Mainstream sucks. Where'd local television programs go?

 

OK I've only read the first page or so of complaints and feel my need to add to the arguement. The first thing I feel the need to say is let's get old school hardcore on this and listen to the Dead Kennedys "MTV Get off the Air."

I live in the SF Bay area which is the bastion of gay rights and I was dissapointed when the independant gay media in San Francisco lauded MTV for putting on Logo the MTV Gay channel. I thaught to myself "Fuck now MTV is going to ass rape the gay culture Just like they ass raped the black culture." I feel for the gay culture and coming out and for anyone in small town Middle America getting MTV's version of "Gay". I seriously doubt you see any Bears on Logo. I do bet you see enough Rosie O'Donnell lesbians and Twink gays to beat the stereotypes into your head. Granted I'm a straight man but I can see how that would increase any confusion of any closeted teen in the midwest. I wonder how many Judas Priest videos they play.

Now let's look at the service that MTV has done for the Black community from the Beginning. MTV wouldn't even play videos by black artists until CBS threatened to pull all of their videos unless they would play Michael Jackson. I'm convinced that "Black TV" Including MTV, VH1, BET, and various syndicated TV shows are a part of a racist conspiracy. Let's start with BET which Chuck D tagged "Bitches and Hoe's TV" If they don't show Gangsta Rap video's it's Reality TV shows with a group of black people acting up some stupid racist stereotype with one white guy acting the same way so they can use him as an arguement as why they aren't racist. Then they show you commercials for Burger King. And you have white kids from the suburbs who beleive that this is black culture. It seems to keep going. MTV goes from The Hills with rich, stupid white girls going through some stereotypical stupid drama to The Flavor of Love with a bunch of stupid ghetto black men acting out some macho racist gangsta stereotype for some totally ghetto ass bitch who comes with her own set of stereotypes. But at least they throw the Token White Dude who acts the same ghetto stereotype just so nobody calls them racist. God it's disgusting.

MTV has edited their logo. They took the "music television" caption out from underneath the MTV logo.

I think they are still doing their live remote spring break telecast from Mexico, even though the whole country has turned into a war zone death trap. More proof that those people have no common sense at all.

 

I never watch it anymore its so horribly stupid, the dance show, and the kids having drama show.. thats all ever see on there.. they do show South Park though thats kind of cool, its not about the music anymore though

This latest fad of putting Italians on tv is the worse yet. What is even worse is the lead characters using the term Guidos and Guidets.These terms contrary to what the lead actors are is not right. They have since fallen from grace!

If I walk into a house and MTV is on and they are actually liking it I need no further introduction because I've just found out pretty much all I need to know about them. It's for simple minds.

VH1 Classic is about the onbly GOOD channel they have left!! (I dont know for how much longer though)

Most people were dumb long before MTV came out, and we'll all still be stupid long after it is gone

 

The general cheapening of this society has progressed steadily since the 60s or 70s and TV is reflective of the dumbing down.I've been around to see it and it's not pretty. If REAL education in this country meant anything--people wouldn't watch much of it at all. Marshall McCluhan saw it for what it is--"the medium is the message". And I'll add-it's all about pussy and strife,to be crass about it.

 

Oh boo hoo, MTV has crappy shows.. theres crappy shows on every station.. MTV doesn't effect popular music, they just display it.. Modern music really is that terrible.. and besides MTV is dumbing down the entire WORLD ages 11-15..

Yep, I agree. It sucks and make me shudder every time I pass by it when I'm flipping through the channels.

 

But is the problem not TV in general, and the consumer 'free market' processes which lay at its basis? While quality TV may exist - I, for one, am looking forward to Mad Men season 4 starting tonight, hurrah! - television, as a medium, functions as a vehicle for delivering commercial messages, shows being mere filler for the advertisements.

The dumbing down of culture is very real, yet tragically few dare delve deeper into the matter, or ask why this should even be so, what with - officially - ever rising levels of education in the West. 'Dumbing down' represents more than just corporate advertisers' ongoing efforts to appeal to the lowest common denominator in a fickle consuming public: it IS the economic reality behind the advertisement.

You see, for all the 'knowledge economy' rap spewed out routinely by politicians, the need to be technologically innovative and what not, is that while PART of the economy requires highly trained professionals to do the innovating, an ongoing process, requiring ever higher levels of education, the growing MAJORITY of work can be done with ever less education. This is called professional de-skilling (though 'retardation' sums it up just fine) and it is a tried and true strategy for cutting down on labor costs (there being no economic need to pay anything more than the bare minimum for a job any idiot can do.).

The reality many college and university graduates are looking at now, is that the economy does not need them. They may or may not be wiser for the academic experience, but are most certainly poorer, deeply in debt, yet having to fiend for the same de-skilled 'service' jobs as their low-educated brethren. In the future, unless you're part of the legal/financial/medical professional elite, you'll be at the bottom of the barrel, busking and flipping burgers, degree or not.
