    I don't consider the op's idea as something that will ruin a kid's life at all. Forcing a child into the soul-crushing conformity of public schools, however, followed by the equally soul-crushing lifestyle of a 9-5 wage slave with the endless pursuit of "stuff", could easily be considered a form of abuse that 'ruins a kid's life".

    As for home-schooling, every kid I know that was home schooled is far smarter and well-balanced than ANY of the public school kids I know. One got her LPN while most kids were in school, and finished her RN before most of them got to college. She had 9 out of 10 markers for Down's Syndrome, and is one of the smartest women I know. She's now married to a doctor, close to 30, and lives way better than most public schooled kids I've known. She is not the exception....she's the rule for all the home-schooled kids I know.
