obviously, such a system would be fair in that assuming each person works equally hard, they will each have to pay the same percentage of their income.

it would be unfair in that there is more often than not a good reason that one roommate makes more than the other.

personally i prefer an equal share system, but not to the extent of pretending not to understand other simple alternative concepts.

That's stupid. I would never pay more than my share. Chances are if I'm making more money than my roommate, it's for a reason.

Meh. I'm all for helping people out through rough patches (I've let several friends stay with me rent free through hard times), but I've yet to see the friends that split incomes like a married couple.

You're probably assuming that people who make more than others have always worked harder for it, and deserve to.

What's "fair" is most always a highly arbitrary suggestion.

I agree. I'm talking about if the OP wishes to help out, financially, then it would be a good scenario. If her friend just wants to help her out though, then that's her decision.

I've let homeless people move in with me and they couldn't contribute anything, but it was someone to hang out with. When they finally got a job though, then I insisted they help out. He ended up quitting his job after only two days though because "it was too hard", so I told him to leave. I won't be taken advantage of. Plus, he took it upon himself to bring a chicken into the motel room we were living in and he kept said chicken in the bathtub. lol Fuck that shit. Him and his chicken had to go.

It usually is a combination how much capital (financial and talent) and how hard you work. One can cover for the other.

    My take on this:

If you can't afford the rent, it is "fair" to move into a cheaper apartment than to burden your "friend" with paying for you.

If I made a decent amount of money and wanted to live with a certain person (I don't enjoy living alone, and probably never will, even if I can easily afford it) I would have no problem paying more than my share if I made more than my roommate. On the other hand, if someone offered this arrangement to me it would probably make me uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to live somewhere if I couldn't pay half the rent.

as far as the OP, if she genuinely doesn't need the rent money from you and you are taking care of her pets and cleaning up after her, I'm not sure I see the problem. Keep the groceries stocked, throw her some money for utilities, and call it a day.

Nah, I let the chicken loose and it ran into a mexican trailer park, so it probably ended up in a quesadilla.

Bunnie-according to what you've posted, she is lucky she found you. It's already been said ,but if you pay the utilities, keep the place nice 'n tidy and take good care of her pets--she would be free to travel, you would have a place to yourself while she is gone and all would be right. Sounds like she would be happy with it. It's a damn shame those other people took advantage of her. Some people have no sense of honor at all. Where does the boyfriend figure in this arrangement?

He was only staying with me here for the month. I take him back to his town next weekend, unfortunately. He lives 7 hours away.

Him moving in has crossed my mind as a possibility, especially with things going the way they are in his town with his fam.
Only reason he's going back now is because of his friends and the fact that nothing is set in stone here, as of yet.

Even if it were, I wouldn't want him to move in right away even if she was okay with it. I want to secure things and experience things on my own for a while before I jump straight into that. Independence is important to me. lol.

So, as a quick update. I don't think I'll be moving in with my friend...
I got back from taking the bf back home and they had come back that night.
Last night I went to go get my things from her place....

To clarify...this is the kitchen...and the gray stuff on my comforter...that's dirty cat litter.

so you're not moving in because the kitchen is too small to see with the naked eye?

To clarify further...those are my things. Which they moved. All of it is thrown in the kitchen and dirty cat litter spilled all over everything.

I think house sitting and chipping in for groceries is completely reasonable. It's what I'd expect from someone taking care of my house.
