Apparently this guy has some kind of melodic heavy metal band and they're relatively well known, but I've never heard them. I think he makes a good point though. Most black metal is ersatz at best or a forgery at worst.
Depends, black metal is a vast genre and requires talented writing-- most of the black metal bands out there just create a bunch of repetitive riffs to make up a song and put it on a low bit-rate demo and claim "this is true black metal."
I don't think it's right to state that most black metal is "fake". I do however think that a lot of black metal is very corny and childish; when it becomes too much about what they are wearing and they start to take their act to seriously. It's silly. But that's my opinion. I know that some people like it and find it to be essential for black metal. Burning down churches and depict your dead friends bodies on album covers?
I agree with this. The OP was probably emphasizing that most Black Metal is not truly Satanic, which is true. Most of these bands merely have an on stage persona. I highly doubt they do their laundry in black makeup and spiked clothing. The same can get said for Gangster rap.
My take is he ment music-wise But where it comes to album art it seems black and white album covers are a more typical hallmark than dead friends (or other dead people ), although a church on fire seems to remain a standard also!
Forests. Every good black metal cover needs a forest and if they're Scandinavian, we need two songs an album about forests and how cold it gets in Scandinavia.
I seen Amon Amarth a few months ago. They kicked ass. And a very "Viking" stage performance, everyone drinking out of horns, a giant Viking mask, & even a guy who got knocked out while crowd surfing
