I posted before reading your follow up. Thanks. Good information and lots to keep me thinking. I wish I knew more about Pleistocene sexual behavior. I think our views are unfortunately, but understandably adversely impacted by our closeness to our selves and our recent (10,000 year) aberrational history. I'm reading a good book now called "Coming Home to the Pleistocene" by Paul Shepard. He doesn't talk about such things, but he does go into detail on how fundamentally different he thinks our psyche is after picking up agriculture and pastoralism.
I think it is the contrary. Betas coerce more because the female does not mate with them willingly. Alphas coerce males more, and females less because willing females are easy to come by. Well, it sounds good except among chimps, infanticide of competing genes is rampant. Betas typically seek to attack alphas in packs, kill their offspring, and sexually coerce females. I`ve no information about this other than evidence of rampant homosexuality among females in the bonobos. I think male homosexuality is more common (though rare, apparently) among chimps and obviously, homo sapiens.
BTW, whereas among gorillas alphas develop a crist, among chimps alphas can be of any genotype. They could be thin and limber, and still be alphas. Although, alphas do typically eat and rest more than betas and therefore develop bulkier physiques in old age, I think. So, the "under the radar guy" with a big dick could very well be recognized as an alpha by a homo-sapiens female. Among chimps that`s a moot point since they have their genitals exposed, and alpha display is common practice before mating.
