i think you should call the proper authorities if you're worried. otherwise, it seems as though that the solution is more to your personal gan than the dogs - which, of course, defeats the purpose. sorry, i don't mean to sound negative there. i guess that's just what these animal groups are for.
I don't know. With all due respect, because I'm sure you're a very good dog owner, I just don't agree with chaining dogs at all. I don't think there is anything particularly cruel about putting a dog on a long chain while at work or out, but I do think even a long chain is cruel when a dog spends his whole life on the chain. Dogs kept on chains all the time become very confused and territorial. I don't think what my roommate said about the pits is made up. He actually became friends with these guys for a while so has spent time over there and saw the way they treated their dogs. He washed his hands clean of them a couple of months ago and appearantly their treatment of dogs was one of the many reasons why. Also my brother told me pretty much the same thing my roommate told me. These weren't full blooded pits so they wouldn't have been worth any money more than likely. A friend of mine who does a lot of rescue work with dogs actually told me earlier today that pits are the most common breed to suffer abuse from being kept on a short chain all the time. I'm not really condemning the practice of putting a dog on a long chain while gone for a few hours. My father always did this when I was a kid. Now I'm more of the persuasion that dogs are part of the family and should stay inside instead of being chained up, but thats just my personal opinion. My problem with my neighbors is that I do know for a fact that their pit bulls were ALWAYS on chains and not given any exercise whatsoever, the pit bulls died while chained up, and the very first day they got this 8 week old puppy they stuck her outside on a short chain to spend the night in the cold. I actually did express my concern yesterday when I returned the dog, which is probably the only reason they didn't immediately put her back on the chain when I returned her. If I see her chained up again I'm going to call animal control to make sure this doesn't happen again. Even if chains are not illegal, there has to be some kind of clause written in the municipal code that requires chains to be a certain length.
Man no one should EVER mistreat an animal. I can't see how stupid anyone could be to get involved in something as f*cked up as dog fighting. I love my black lab as if she were my own baby. And that's not just because she's the most adorable 11 year old puppy you will ever meet. Like yeah, Michael Vick is practically unstoppable on the football field, but I will never cheer for him again after what was turned up at his home. I love dogs far too much. Also, I can't stand seeing pitbull owners making their dogs more fierce. This leads to harm to humans and other dogs, on top of giving them a bad name. My girlfriend's aunt has a rescued pitbull that is so sweet because she was raised as a beloved companion and not an inhumane security system.
Well, that's good. I don't think I have anything to add to this thread, lunar covered pretty much all of it.
Oh, I totally agree, shouldn't spend their whole lives on chains, I'm just saying I think it's totally okay to use a chain to keep a dog confined when need be, within reason. But no, a puppy should NOT spend the night outside, in gneral. Some people have well cared for outdoor dogs that live together in an enclosure, or if it's being trained as a work dog that will be expected to do that kind of thing (sheep, law enforcement, etc) that's different, but no, can't just toss a generic puppy outside... I know pits are horribly abused, but still, most people would keep them alive, even if they're not very nice to them. If they're like that about dogs, try to get it back, by all means... but don't involve the authorities unless you see it's being seriously mistreated and endangered, because now these neighbors have some shit on you....
Just walked outside and heard the dog yelping in the backyard, its chained up again. my roommate talked me out of involving the authorities; he said he researched our municipal law and couldn't find any clause in any dog laws requiring the chain to be a certain length. As long as they're feeding the dog and providing it shelter, which they are in the form of a small dog carrier with the door torn off that the dog will outgrow in a matter of weeks, there is nothing we can legally do. I called the woman and left her a message offering money for the dog. Hopefully she'll call me back.
I don't want to add to law-haters; but that is sort of where I am. I know I've surely never received even a hint of help from any law or so-called Animal Control and/or Abuse Authorities (but several threats of varying violations which were total BS!) Hopefully, your state is better than mine. (SC) Too bad you can't just get that puppy and get it away from these jack-asses, even if you have to find a home for the puppy a town away or something. Better yet, I truly hope you hear something from the ppl over there, and they just let you have (or pay a nominal fee for) the animal.
I am from SC....that almost makes me want to laugh in that ironic way that isn't really funny. Damnit. I've been going through city and state laws all day and cannot find anything that can possibly help out in this situation. I understand the points people have made about being able to chain your dogs when needed, but there should be a law about the length of chain and the amount spent on the chain. This wouldn't be abuse if the puppy was only out there for a limited time each day, but I first heard the puppy squealing on the chain today at 5:30 pm and I just got home, its after 1, its going to frost tonight, and the dog is still squealing. It sounds like they moved her from right behind the house to the very back of their land as well. There should be something that can legally be done about that and there just isn't. I've never been much of an activist but this has inspired me to start lobbying for better laws regarding the confinement of animals.
didnt read the whole thread but unfortunately its too late for the pit bulls.and doesnt really matter for the puppy.the laws really dont care about the animals.even if theyre caught mistreating the puppy they most likely end up getting a slap on the wrist.we really need hellaciously tough animal protection laws.i have a few pit bull rescues for friends on my facebook page and some of the stories are just plain horrible.i absolutely love dogsespecially pit bulls.i cant imagine doing anything like what ive read to a dog.my pit always ate before i did.if we ran out of food for her we would cook her a steak or something till we got her food.she had a full bowl of food 24/7.always had a huge bowl of water.we even put ice cubes in her water in the summer so she could have a cold drink.even vet care all the time.im lucky i know my vet and work on his cars so my vet care was always free.but vet care isnt that expensive if you keep up with it and make sure the animal is taken care of. sorry but animal abuse pisses me right the fuck off.
this poor pit was starved almost to death then tossed in a garbage bag and thrown down the garbage chute of a 22 story building.if the maintenance workers didnt find him he wouldve died in the trash compactor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYm7irMrlF4&NR=1"]YouTube - Patrick - Road to Recovery as of March 21, 2011 look at his eyes the poor thing only wants to be loved and to love.how the fuck could somebody do this?what the fuck is wrong with people?the person responsible has been caught and is in jail but will most likely end up with a small fine and community service or less than a year in prison.
I couldn't watch it. The dirty sonofabitch that did this would've followed that dog right down the chute if I'd been there. Anyone that mistreats animals or children should do jail time. I hope he doesn't have children.
I've been following Patrick's story, a friend of mine sent me a link about it a few days ago. That is horrible. I honestly don't understand how people can do such horrible things to animals. If you don't like animals, don't have pets. That should be a simple concept. If someone doesn't like animals why the hell would they even get a pet in the first place? it blows my mind. I'm moving in a couple of weeks. I've been debating it for a while, I'm not in a lease or anything. This has really pushed me over the edge, I don't want to live next door to my neighbors anymore. And I'm stealing that puppy when I move. I'm sure some people may think that is wrong, but I don't care. Its right to me. She's officially been on that chain for almost 24 hours straight, I can't just move knowing that she could end up like Patrick or like my neighbors' old pits.
There are blanket animal abuse laws. If you could get a suprise visit from an official who ISN'T evil, sadistic, and power crazy (read:they don't exist) you might get the puppy seized. (and then if you didn't adopt it, I imagine it'd just be put down...) Just to put things in perspective, you should look at what happens to PEOPLE in your own states and countries prison systems.... It's pretty fucked up. (not saying we shouldn't have prison, just saying the way we do is fucked beyond belief) People are animals too! And the ones that the system doesn't like can't speak for themselves much more than most animals, because the fact that the system doesn't like them is the only counter point anyone needs to dismiss them! Also, again, I have to disagree one time/length requirements. Laws that limit individuals are bad, and the situation can vary. If I have reason, my dog might be on a two foot leash for a while, or she might be one a 30 foot leash for a longer time. I don't think you can just legislate your way out of problems, look what's happened to the US for trying that! All you do is make criminals out of good people, while the bad people get away with it, because they where already hiding their wrongdoing. If you need to, find a home some ways away, and arrange for the new owners to find a "stray" near their house, in case anyone comes asking.
There was even a story in a local newspaper (www.independentmail.com) on Sunday, March 27 (this past Sunday) under the column by Salley M. McInerney. It was a terribly sad story about a dog found dead by the law (is ANYONE out there surprised?!?) because the dog was on Too Short A Chain, and even appeared to be sitting up (with blood running from her mouth and/or nostrils). The jackass owner claimed to have shortened her chain because of complaining neighbors; yet, it was a neighbor that was so concerned she called the law over and over until they managed to lug their asses over there and determine the dog was, in fact, dead. It was a pit or boxer one...two of the most undeserved maligned breeds, especially in this backassward state. Beyond the shadow of a doubt the laws regarding animals (and especially the shortest length of chain a dog MUST have) need to changed around here desperately.
AMEN!!! I agree 1000% And in my (wee) mind - someone who would abuse and mistreat animals would most likely do so to a child....both innocents. The same kind of people that won't directly face me. Edit: I will add that they won't ever (never have, anyway, when given more than ample opportunity) face me when the life or wellness of an animal or child that has been involved has been taken care of! As long as there is an innocent, I'll be nice as sugar...let me see 'em without that leverage.
Lynn...since you're not that far from me, I'm sure the weather is the same where you are. Chilly, dreary, rainy, and the poor puppy is outside in this shit I'm going to take her in my house tonight when I get home from work and when and if that horrible woman comes to check on her, I plan on giving her a piece of my mind. This woman really doesn't want to face me. I'm the sweetest person most of the time, but I can breathe fire when it comes to children and animals. I am exactly like you...people really don't want to mess with me when an innocent is involved  My fighting southern girl spirit comes out in situations like this.
