So I don't know how long ago this happened bit I just watched this video on reasons teachers were fired. most were normal sensible reasons, sexual misconduct, drunk while teaching, but than I came to one that in my mind is absolutely retarded there was this teacher named "Clarissa" who on her own time during spring break twerked on stage.

Ya some asshole filmed it and put it online but still it was something she did on her own time it's in no way illegal and she wasn't hurting anyone and yet she still lost her job that's just ridiculous

Teachers can be fired on moral grounds.

I knew a guy who got fired for walking into a pool hall.

In San Francisco last year there was a HUGE uproar when the Catholic Schools there forced all teachers to sign a morals clause.

This type of thing should be outlawed.

Teachers can be fired from public schools specifically for morality in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

For example, if it had been discovered that I frequented a web site such as Hip Forums on my own time while employed by the school district, and a school board member deemed it an immoral site due to some of the content...I could have been fired as an immoral person.

Most other states have some type of probable cause clause that allows them to find probable cause to fire a teacher if they wish. Remember tenure just provides for due process, it doesn't prevent any teacher from being fired for a variety of reasons, contrary to what the union busting Republicans tell you.

Essentially you sign a morals clause when you sign your first contract.

Meh, just don't send your kids to Catholic schools...or don't get a job at a Catholic school.

Outlawed? How open-minded. I am sure some teachers don't have any problems at all with signing a morals clause, and live by it.
So let them live how they want to.

Got a problem with that? Then stay away and leave it to people who don't mind it. There's something for everyone.

Had it been up to me, I would have given her a raise and a promotion.

I think you should have to prove that a teacher's actions in themselves substantially interfered with the education of students in order to fire them.

It's the assholes who violated her privacy by filming and putting that shit online who should get punished.

I went to Catholic school. Had a teacher that had tats and another that smoked heavily. It was different than high-school but not due to morality of teachers the way you would guess.

Only if you were represented by a union. Otherwise it's you against the school board and their lawyers.

Also before you acquire tenure you can be fired for anything...no reason given and you have no recourse.

Agreed. Teachers are humans, plain and simple. As long as they do their job, and do it relatively well, there is no reason to hold them to a different professional standard.

One of everyone's favorite coaches (mine included) was fired because he told an off-color joke at a post-graduation lock in for the high school graduates post-graduation. He works as an assistant manager at the grocery store now. His wife was fired a couple years later because she was buying alcohol for and having sex with her male students. My brother was one of the kids who partied with her, but I don't think he ever had sex with her. I hope to god he didn't.

Its not like everytime someone gets fired its for the "official" reason they got fired.

Some areas are just too messy or in particular too costly

    Theres always another way

Maybe "Clarissa" was just a really shit teacher, and that was the quickest way to get rid of her
