I tried my mobile phones and that doesnt get reception in my microwave though admitly the power is few orders of magnitude lower. I might try a TV with tin foil over the door but id have thought that 60Hz could radiate from the power line?

I've also heard that microwaves can change the structure of food, albeit in some tabloid mag, Im not sure of the mechanism or indeed if its true. Microwaves are non ionising so cant generate those evil free radicals the health crowd seems to have declared war on. As usual a google search gave complete rubbish. I imagine its better than boiling where you loose all your nutrients by diffusion into the water.

I'm going with yes microwaves are safe. They do reduce the nutritional value of foods to a degree. Though that is the case if you freeze your food before consumeing. So apart from the notion of cooking over a open fire with food grasped from your back garden, being 'right on man'. microwaveing food is acceptable.

What year are we in 1952 ?.

The operating frequency for a microwave oven is 2.45 GHz. This is a so-called "ISM" frequency, widely used by unlicensed equipment such as cordless phones, video transmitters, etc.

A microwave oven wiping out a video link is not necessarily a problem, but a microwave leak detector (less than $20) is a good way to be sure. Video receivers and the like are highly sensitive devices, and can be overwhelmed by amounts of RF far below any hazard level.

The "cell phone test" isn't very useful as a test of microwave oven leakage, because the phone operates on a different frequency than the oven does. The oven cavity is NOT a "faraday cage" which screens out all frequencies, but employs door flanges and seals tuned for the 2.45 GHz frequency band ONLY.

With the mobile phone idea I was assuming that either way the wavelength is in the cm range and the holes in the door look to me to be around a mm, so I figured it wouldbe close enough, but i didnt consider the edge of the door.

I don't know who invented years man. Take today subtract 'a bloody long time ago' and you end up with 'living in the past'. The question of 'microwaves being safe' was answered 'a fairly substantial time ago'.

and no i have no clue about time either...

I don't know Paul. It could well be. I'm not in the habit of useing outdated or damaged microwave ovens though. While standing with my eyes pressed against the glass. So i'm going with following safe guidlines in useing such equipment.

That is not to say there are potential risk if you use them frequently. If it is part of your work. Then the pontetial for 'risk' is increased.

Useing such language as ''frazzel brains '' is slightly melodramatic , don't you think.

You are right, people that use microwaves are sometimes lazy. You can use it in all manner of ways though. It does not have to be for cheap nutrtionaly vacant packaged food.

Don't you think 'pots and pans' are lazy man. We should be tracking and killing our food [unless vegeterian].. Maybe maintaining our own allotments. Bare chested come rain or shine.

Beating our dirty loin clothes over a wet stone near the local canal .

We might also get up before we go to sleep to 'work down pit'.

Though i'm sure thats takeing things a little far.

No one actually makes you use a microwave oven if you dont want to. Besides hobs can be more funky than microwaves, induction hobs are way more clever than microwaves.
