I loved their first record, saw them open for Beck and was very happy with their live performance.
The new album...I do not like. Not because it is is different than the first one, I just think it is a completely lackluster set of songs.

Wow I didn't know they toured with Beck... I would have loved to have been able to experience that tour!

I loved MGMT back when they were The Management. Their newest album was a disappointment for me. I just felt like they tossed some stuff together and didn't really get into the details. I really dig full, layered music and Congratulations just didn't do it for me.

I would not go that far Max...but they set themselves up for the a big release if they go back to their former sound/style for their next record.
They need Dave Friedman back as their producer. He produced the first one, and produces alot of The Flaming Lips stuff.
If their (MGMT) next album is as weak as the second, and Dave Friedman DOES NOT produce it, I am going to be convinced the first one was so great due to HIS production, more than the band's work.

hmmm i don't see them going back to the sound of their first LP, a bands gotta keep progressin' ya know. and it's not really the band i hate, just the fans, like when they go to festivals just to hear electric feel etc. then leave. they should leave.

Oh yeah that bugs me too, the wanting to just hear the single thing. But you can progress and still make a good record. Sad to say, but alot of people do not listen to ALBUMS anymore, just one or two songs. Then the vicious circle starts...a band does not make a ALBUM, they have one or two good songs and then a bunch of "filler".
I liked their first record alot, ALL of it. :)

yeah pretty much what you just said is one of the problems with popular music these days, and some have talent, its a sad thing. glad to see you're listening to albums in their entirety though haha.

I love it all. Everything from Climbing To New Lows to Oracular Spectacular to Metanoia EP to Congratulations. There is not a single song I skip when listening to each album (except sometimes Lady Dada's nightmare on Congratulations - that song creeps me out).

    this.

i always thought, that they were self described as the scene kids who were so scene that they weren't.

that being said, their first album is a musical masterpiece.

Oracular Spectacular is one of my favorite albums, ever. I was initially disappointed with Congratulations, but I've grown to respect it more and more. Anyone else with a similar experience? I find myself humming "I Found a Whistle," frequently haha!

Congratulations is great, but it really is hard to decide which I prefer when compared to Oracular Spectacular. "The Handshake" and "Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters" are just so good.

and the album is truly different from the first one.Does mgmt intent for shunning self-reproduction? One of my friends said that kids is so 'lollipop-like'.... haha though i love it.....

It's not as catchy as Oracular Spectacular, but its trippiness cannot be compared to. XD
