Venom deserve a shout out for creativity and for being influencial, as well as Iron Maiden, who I say was a bigger influence in the power metal scene. Judas Priest, KISS and Motörhead are all deserving mentions for sparking off the genre.
You know, one thing I am not so up on is the black metal beginnings, guess I'll have to do some research...
Check out Celtic Frost and Bathory for the start of black metal. After that you already get into the 90's. However, I guess Mercyful fate can be seen as an influence for the early black metal bands as well.
From what I do know of black metal, Venom was a great influence for the early bands, but who are the early bands?
Yeah, Venom was an influence as well. Some of the first bands that really made black metal are Darkthrone, Mayhem and Burzum. Other black metal bands were already also influenced by those three. Like Immortal and Marduk.
I was thinking Burzum/Mayhem, though I wasn't sure if they were the first. The roots of death metal rest with Possessed and Death, with influences from Slayer and Venom, I believe... Though its been argued that it's all just thrash influenced thrash.
Aye, black metal history is far more archaic and interesting than almost any other style of music's history. I read an awesome book on it. I think it might have been called "A history of black metal" although it was a few years ago, so i could be wrong. It mainly dealt with Burzum, Mayhem, Varg vs Euronymous, Emperor, Immortal and Darkthrone and probably a couple of others i forget. I've been looking for a copy to buy for a while now, can't find it anywhere, it doesn't even come up on google, which is probably a fairly good indication that i don't remember the correct name Oh and it had a heap of stuff about the whole black metal culture in Europe, had shit on the church burnings, the supposed satanic rituals and grave dessecrations attributed to black metaleers and thier fans.
Was it 'Lords of chaos'? A friend of mine ordered that one. I'm a bit sceptic about it, myself. Especially since they seem to be making / have made / are planning to make a fucking MOVIE out of it...
YES! Thank you Sceptic in what way? It's mostly based on interviews from the actual band members and others closely involved, managers etc. so i'd say it's pretty accurate. Of course there's bound to be a few who make misleading statements, as, understandably, they wouldn't want to be linked to old crimes. I don't agree with making a movie out of it however. The only way i'd watch it is if they had the actual people playing themselves, and it was a documentary with new interviews as well as the old. If it's just going to be a popular movie-for-the-masses with dramatized scenes by actors then i'm not interested.
I was expecting Slayer to be in the lead, with Pantera then Metallica then Megadeth. I never got in to Pantera as much as i did Slayer, though.
For me it would probably be Metallica - Megadeth - Pantera - Slayer. I used to listen to Metallica like crazy 7-5 years ago, and recently I've re-taken a liking towards Megadeth. Pantera has a few nice songs, and Slayer never really grabbed me.
http://www.burzum.org/eng/library/lords_of_lies.shtml Of course Varg isn't the most... reliable source there is - and I'm sorry to bring the topic of a random thread back to Burzum/Varg for the 14/88th time - but there are a lot of people who've read it and thought it was crap before this article had been published. I'll have to see for myself, though... I guess when mr. Stynn is done with the book I'll have my own looksee. Tell me what you think of it when you've read it! ^_^
