You should ask them why they wear their hair the way they do. Then they should realize what a silly question it is and move on.

I fought the law and...well, IIIII won.

My parents are the most conservative people on this planet. So I told them I was getting dreadlocks and of course, it was "No, you're not." "That's disgusting." "They look terrible and dirty." ect ect ect...

I informed them that it was was I wanted, explained that it was important to me spiritually, that it wasn't completely permanent, and dug up as many photos of gorgeous dreads as I could on the internet. After giving my parents the slideshow and speech I let it set in. Next day we were in town and I asked if we could stop by Sally's to pick up a metal comb, rubber bands, and wax. (Do NOT use wax! That was a misstep on my part which has been corrected.) We went in, she bought the stuff for me, shaking her head all the while...she also bought me several pretty scarves and headbands.

As she put it to my father, "I'm not buying my daughter a crackpipe or alcohol..I'm not paying for her bail or her abortion. I buying rubber bands. I think we're pretty well off as far as daughters go." The whole time I was making my dreads they just shook their heads, alternately laughing and asking "Why? Why would you want to do this?!"

Today my mom admitted that they were cute. "Just a little bit." HaHA!!

A couple of years ago while I was helping a young friend along in the dreading process, she confessed to me that her parents were dead-set against the new hairstyle until after they met me/saw my hair. That made me feel good! :D

Way to stand up for your dreads. I wanted them back when I was eleven or twelve and my mother refused to listen to me.. of course I was twelve and wanted to live in the tree in our backyard, but anyway, I've been thinking about getting them again, but I'm slightly worried I won't like them once I have them. PLus I have an oily scalp and someone told me that would be bad for dreads. My question: is this true or random "I think I know it all, but I don't" crap? <3

i was in the grocery store a few days ago. there was a boy, maybe 10 or 11. he had AWESOME dreads. they were a little longer than shoulder lenght. his mom was talking to the cashier about him. " yeah and now he's class president! they love his hair." the kid just smiled proudly. the mom wasn't dready at all either. if i see them again i plan on commenting him on his hair.. maybe high-fivin' his mom for being so cool and open enough to let her kid express himself.

parents, confusing creatures, so get them, i mean if they try and cut em out say url get theres out, be a rebel you only have 1 chance!

at the park yesterday a BALD dad asked me how i got my hair to dread. i explained it to him. he told me his son has been asking for dreads, but since he didn't know how to do it he hasn't dreaded his sons hair. how awesome is that? a parent asking someone else how to dread hair! his little boy looked to be about 5 or 6.. i hope to see them again at the park so i can help them with his dreadies. DAMN IT, I LOVE THIS AREA!

I don't know much about this, because I actually work for my dad :& But I'd assume that goes along with almost any body mod... like if you have visible tattoos or piercings.

I knew a girl that had a monroe piercing, and got a new job under the condition that she completely removed the piercing.

I know the way the world works and all, but in all honesty, I think not getting hired for things like that, are dumb... especially considering that body modification (tattoos, piercings, dreads, whatever) are much more prevalent these days.

95% of the people I know have either tattoos, piercings, or something to the affect.

I also think its dumb when places ask you to put a band-aid over piercings... that looks twice as obnoxious as a little stud on your face.

Whatever. I'm not contributing much to this thread, just ranting a little :)

im going to add to your rant. I dont think dreadlocks are a form of body modification at all... infact cutting your hair and gussying up everyday is more body modification than letting your hair grow in its natural form. just my 2 cents.
