It's not that I believe in everything I hear about dreadz :) ... But then again I have no real knowledge about the subject either, so I tend to consider everything I'm reading or hearing. Even reading this forum can be confusing due to all the different points of views. Said that, it is one of the best sites I've found on the whole dreadz issue.

And the Bob Marley myth was ment more as a joke than an actual belief of mine[IMG] ..

It don't make sense really. Having dreadlocks such as his will make it hard for the parasits to live in so I don't believe one word of that.

That's crap - I think the worst things a teenager could do would have nothing to do with appearance. At least you aren't out robbing liquor stores or anything like that.

If you are a good kid and stay out of trouble, you ARE a good daughter, despite what you mom thinks.

My mom wouldn't let me have dreads in high school, but now I don't think she cares what I do with my body as long as I'm taking good care of myself and living a good life. That's what should really matter.

I fought the dread battle with my parents in high school and decided to give up - I'm the oldest kid, so I was I guess the experimental one and they were pretty strict with me. My lil' sis on the other hand gets to dye her hair (something they would never let me do), go out with her friends way more than I ever did, and all sorts of stuff I was never allowed to do...bleh! Anyhoo, I just gave up on it and chopped off my very long hair instead. I kept my hair super short until about 2 years ago when I started letting it grow. I had debated letting it grow and dread before, but I was forced to work at Crackdonald's for a couple years, and I really didn't want to try to maintain dreads while working in a grease factory - nasty! But I got my long hair back and it's so tangly and such a pain in my ass. Everyone thinks it's pretty and all that bull, but I don't really care - it ain't doing nothin' for me. I'm tired of all the maintainence that goes into it, so I quit. Invested in some Dr. Bronner's, Gave all my shampoo and gunky conditioner to my lil' sis who still has straight hair, and stopped combing on Friday, just a few days ago. Already I have fledgling dreads, which tells me this is how my hair naturally wants to be. I had my family Thanksgiving yesterday, and my mom was kinda sad because she liked my pretty, long hair, but she really didn't have that much to say about it. I suppose she feels it's my hair and I can do what I want with it...why wasn't she so lax when I was a teenager?

EDIT: I should also mention that I work in a very dread-friendly store. It'll be kinda humbling I'm sure for the next few weeks when my hair makes me look like some insane lady with a rat's nest on her head, but I look forward to those experiences. To me, it's part of the journey.

oooo I love that! im calling them faerie locks from now on! wasn't the term "dread" locks used in a more derogatory way when the settlers saw the natives of this land? faerie locks just makes me smile :)

It has been about what like 2 to t1/2 months of the dreads, they are still tightening up more and more, lots of loose hairs and if i don't seperated them daily they form in to one giant dread over night.

My super conservative boss is infatuated with them always asking questions and bragging to other people in the office3 that one of her employee's has dreads....I'm actually not to fond of that part. but at least she isn;t giving me a hard time.

My mom eveuntually just said to me, "It would be one thing if you were some lazy pot head loser laying on my couch all day doing nothing with your life....but you are responsible adult and you pay your ouwn way and take care of your self, it's your hair just make sure you don't smell when my friends come over....." the last part was more of a joke that anything.

over all my dread experinece so far has been very amazing. people who I knew in my office before who had no idea I have dreads until I let them in really are taken back. I feel like being who I am and doing what I want to do has really opened up some locked doors for a some people.

    That makes me really happy.

Dude I unfortunately for 3 years of my life had to slave at Crackdonald's due to the profound lack of jobs there are in my town (I'm really lucky to have the job I have now). I would have never dreamed of having dreads, having to work in a place where grease floats in the AIR. I'd be afraid of the grease sticking in them, the evil McStench sticking to them, and also the bad energies in a high-stress work environment sticking in them as well...

Off topic, but McDonald's made my life so shitty when I worked there. The evilness I had to deal with there made me a very angry person and it often carried over into my personal life. I'm so glad I escaped.

My parents made me wait until i was 18 to go ahead and get locks. They were still very reluctant (and hate them still) but are tolerant. My mom even backcombed for me because she said "If anyone screws up my sons hair its going to be me!" youve gotta love moms :) I work at a very conservative christian nursing home and the administration there all loves my dreadlocks! Its only because i started working there well before i got the dreads and formed good relations with my employer and coworkers. Its good to know that I hopefully disproved the lazy, dumb, pothead stereotype that hangs around good folks with locks. ( i must add that i am a lazy pothead but it doesnt show while im workin because theres a time and place for laziness and pot smokin)

yeah i plan on having my girl put them in for me while I'm at a music festival this summer then come home and take the fire. Don't think my mom will be to happy but she'll get over it like she did when my hair was blue. Just a little worried about finding anew job once school starts.

i want dreads so bad..but everyone keeps telling me they're nasty and disgusting, which i know they are not.
my best friend even threatened me with the whole 'i will shave your head when you are asleep thing' but i know she wouldn't do that.
now i just have to convince the parents to let me have them.
and i have to find someone who can do them.good.

You don't have to do anything to start dreads. In fact, you should STOP a lot of what you are doing...i.e. combing, conditioning.

Well when my mom found out i was getting dreads she freaked and said she was going to kick me out of the house. Shes one of those despirate housewife plastic surgery types and refused to be seen with me in public.that was a few years ago and She got over it .[IMG] I just don't know what to say to people when they come to me and ask me "why? why do people have dreadlocks?" I mean what do you say to that i only have them because its really natural and it feels right somehow ...i feel bad that i don't have this big deep meaning to tell them. but i have dreadlocks because i never want to forget that i am a part of nature and if i destroy it i am distroying myself.
