Having a chip like this one means it could crunch numbers that would ordinarily require about a 1,000 times more space on a chip using about a 1,000 times less power and time. Its great for crunching really big numbers, but too difficult to program and by making it a pattern matching processor to begin with they making it easier to design such a chip so that people can use for specific applications such as visual pattern recognition. This is along the same lines as what IBM and Hewlett Packard are attempting to do and has to do with machine learning and deep learning programming. Theoretically, since it merely matches patterns in the same way the human brain does, you could eventually design a computer that resembles the human brain in a lot of ways and "raise" an Ai that resembles a human mind.
