Thanks. I feel better already, not so bloated out and I've definitely got more energy. Must resist the devil sausage and demonic bacon
You tried much in the way of substitutes? I hardly remember what meat was like, so I don't know how convincing they are, but Quorn sausages are nice, and you can get a number of varieties of fake bacon.
Yeah but they don't quite have the same texture. I guess that they will seem more real after I haven't had meat for a while, but I'll probably save that stuff for barbeques or get togethers rather than my staple diet. This whole exercise isn't just about animal welfare, it's about my health too ~ so I'm guessing that fried quorn is still a pretty unhealthy option.
Yeah, from a health perspective, fried food ain't great. If you need a substitute to help ease you through the transition, things like Quorn sausages at least make fried breakfasts a possibility!
It isn't about transitions for me though, I'm far too much of an 'all or nothing' type. Substitution to me is a bit like giving up smoking by going for herbal cigarettes. I'm not ruling it out though. I was thinking about meat substitues though ... I mean they must be tested by meat eaters to get a benchmark for the taste. So if that is the case are we really endorsing their meat eating by having them?
That's cool. It's whatever works best for you. Some people need to reduce their meat intake as a first step, for example. Personally, I gave it up overnight seventeen years ago and never looked back. Well there's a debate about whether substitutes actually encourage the view that meat is enjoyable, but I've never really worried too much about it.
I've been following your progress since the beginning of this post Paul and I keep meaning to give you my support, so here it is!! It looks like you're doing really well. I've been veggie since I was 14 and never struggled with it. Fortunately I didn't really like eating meat or fish anyway, but it was (and still is) the fact that I don't want to take any flesh into my body (apart from the Dok's! ) But I've always thought it strange with people who eat meat but like to be ethical about other stuff, it doesn't make sense and so your reasons at the beginning of your post were spot on. I'm kinda of rambling so please forgive me but I think it's good that you're trying and if you need any more info just give us a shout!
What is this word "cook" that people keep using? Is this some sort of new fangled technology thing? (Day 9 - I'll stop counting soon)
Ok, bit of a weird tip/suggestion here, buy Jamie Olivers cook book. There is a reason for this, honest!! A friend of mine bought me this for my birthday a few years ago and although there is meat in the book I was living with vegetarians, so I ended up making a lot of the dishes either without the meat or with a substitute and they make really tasty meals!! (excuse the over extended sentence Sax Machine!) Anyway, that's my little bit of help, good luck with it Paul, hope it carries on going well.
Sorry if it appears like I'm picking on you here..... but a pretty good way to demonstrate your love for an animal is not to butcher it and stuff it down your throat. Dead giveaway that one!
True but I must admit it eases MY guilt to eat organic free range animals over factory bred caged animals!
Oh yeah, it's a great guilt-easer. It's also better than eating factory-farmed meat. However, I still think killing something and sticking it down your throat is a pretty weird way of expressing love!
Too True!! I may love my pet but I don't think I'd ever go into a meat fenzy and eat it because it had had a good life so far so it was ok.
Toiday is day 14. I came so close to eating a tin of ravioli the other day. I opened it, completely forgetting that it had meat in it.
