I'm gonna wash my new dreads for the first time later :) I can remember when I put my first dreads in, and was too scared too wash them with anything for fear of leaving shit in them xD n'awww. Gonna take a few pics of individual dreads soon.

She's STILL not had it! She went in labour at 2am and it's now 6:13pm. I swear the baby is clinging onto the sides like 'noooo'

Well, I'm a dreadie as well, celebrating my third year of having them at the end of the month. My hair was straight and fine and wouldn't lock up at first, I braided it and left it alone for 8 months. They looked nappy and messy, I took them out and had to use a paperclip to separate my hair...I had an afro for a day, backcombed and it was all good. I DID NOT use wax or anything like that! When the person above mentioned to leave it alone, that was GREAT advice! You should leave them alone and let them ride out how they are supposed to. It depends on why you're dreading, you look really young, and it's most likely a hairstyle for you. To alot of people, dreads are a lifestyle. You can't take them out because you don't like the way they look. Jah blesses you with locks that are proper for you to have. In your photos, you show that you don't leave them alone, the beads and what not are fine, but you've colored and washed your hair...no chemicals! I have colored my locks before and had to wait a year before doing so, so they would lock up properly without the chemicals. There's no easy messy free way of doing them. I use baking soda and coconut milk to wash my hair, use Nature's Best hemp seed oil for my scalp to keep it from getting flakes. But for the fist year, you need to leave them alone. Separate where needed, but they'll turn out best if you let them ride out....you don't want dreads that look like braids...and some of mine have even broken off towards the bottoms for me playing and re-dreading it too much. I found a great forum that could help you get started ( I know you mentioned you know what you're doing and have been doing it since Dec. 24th, well, that may be cool and all but it's not even a year and there are experienced heads on this site that can help you create locks that you'll enjoy for life...if you're getting them for the right reasons of course..) I am 30, and didn't realize that dreads were for me until I was 23...it was a 5yr journey for me to even get started on them) This style takes a lot of patience. Proper dreads can't be rushed...they are a gift.
Here's the site.. www.dreadlockssite.com Very helpful if you're still under your year mark!

I've been a member of this site for quite a while now. I'm nearly 17, so I know what to do with dreads. Dreads aren't just a 'hairstyle' for me. I've always dreamed of having dreads since I was little. I can remember seeing people with them, and always feeling the urge to reach out and touch them, because i've always thought they were beautiful. To get dreads is a dream come true.
I took them out once, because I felt like they were all placed wrongly and I didn't like the sizes, and generally didn't like them. So I re-did them, and I love them to bits. When I took the first picture, my hair was bleached. I dyed my hair about a month afterwards, when I still had about three dreads. I really don't play with them at all, and I don't see how i've come across like I have. Yes they have beads and stuff in them, but that's just because I liked them being in there and I think it adds a bit of character about them and makes me feel better about them. The only time I even lay a finger on my dreads is when i'm washing them or taking or putting a bead off, in which I take most of them out when washing anyway.

I dig the beads and trinkets! I have some as well, and have found some really cool stuff to accent my locks on etsy.com I wanted to color my hair so bad because I had tried this blonde once and missed my natural strawberry color..I wasn't giving you a hard time girly, I just know sooo many people, girls your age and a little older that do the dreads and then get mad because it's "ruined" their hair or they get bored and take them out and what not..that's why I always try to inform peeps that it's not that type of hairstyle. I've had mine for three years but still learn something new to do for them all the time. Knowledge is power! :)
I wish you well on your journey, it's different for everyone, and what works for you might not for others, but you're doing YOU so that's what's important. As far as your new niece, yey!!! My sister is expecting, she's going to be due right before my wedding so I get to meet the new addition..I love being an Auntie because we can send cool presents and have fun! It's a blast! :sunny:

I love etsy : I understand how some other people might think it's just a hairstyle, and I, myself get quite at annoyed at people who have dreads just because they think it's a hairstyle. I know I took them out before and re-did, but I really wasn't happy with the way they turned out :)
My niece is so cute and so tiny!
