For those who don't know what a McMansion is

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMansion

Anyway the other day I went through a new burb in Melbourne I had never previously heard of and all the houses were McMansions . I think some of the criticism is a little unfair. In a way I can see the appeal of living in one.Unlike all the housing developments I saw in the UK when I grew up, these houses were individually designed.

A lot of McMansions have sprung up in the foothills in the forests and meadows where I used to hike and explore. I grew resentful of them all.

Our home is an old 1450 sq foot 1935 Craftsman beach bungalow. It's an awesome small home in an affluent beach community. Every other house on our block is a 'McMansion'. We sometimes feel like we are getting squeezed out of the area. But, we love it and will stay here till we die.

McMansions are the worst. Someone recently built one of the biggest I've ever seen near my mom's house and every time I drive by it I wonder why anyone would want a house that large unless they plan to throw a huge, 1920s influenced great gatsby-esque party. Seriously, the house is always so dark with one or two sad cars parked out front. It is begging to host a party.

Yup, same here. Personally, I wouldn't want to clean a house that large. Our house is perfect for us, fast and easy to clean.

Lots of space is nice. Not necessary, but nice.

Craftsman bungalows are probably my favorite style of house. I would take well designed small space over needless space any day.

I've got a big place. 2500+ sqft not including attached garage and partial basement, and it is a true custom home. It was designed by a real architect, back when blueprints were made from hand drawn drafts. (I actually scored the blueprints and one hand drawn draft) It's made from real Redwood and actual brick on block construction, not brick faced 2X4's and particle board crap.

What I don't like about any new construction, McMansion or not, is a "custom home" is now an arrangement of pre determined modules done in CAD. Today's "architect" just arranges these modules in a different order and tells the buyer "it's custom, not another one like it". BULLSHYT! This is like building Lego homes.... Most of these homes begin to show structural defects in 5-10 years. We now have throwaway homes to go along with our throwaway society.

A McMansion is basically a mansion wannabe. It sorta has the size, but totally lacks in quality and design.
I have been in several of them. They are obviously cheaply made.

These buildings are tax write-offs and investments, they are not homes.

you probably wouldn't want to build a mcmansion if you can't afford to hire a cleaning service.

I dont see the point in Property, even if you get great annual increases in home values as we have had here in Aus, where the OP and I are from, by the time you factor in all costs, including the fact that annual increase in home value doesnt compound every year

Plenty of better ways to get a better return, plenty of better ways to attract tax breaks...that dont involve sinking most of your eggs into one basket

Compound interest is the one that catches most out

I read that definition. There are lots of houses going up in the city where I grew up. I live in the next city over now. Here they're doing apartments like mad. What always occurred to me is that nobody can afford them! But they keep on building. I wonder who will end up occupying them sometimes. There aren't jobs around there that support that kind of housing. The only thing that makes any sense is a loan scenario like what Karen J was warning against!

real money doesn't live in suburban developments if they have the brains to keep it. a development of exclusively expensive houses, i mean, that's really a sucker trap for big egos.
mcmansions are for mid livel managers, who still have to commute to their places of work, and are gullible enough to want to try to impress each other with a big fancy house.
really the only thing impressive about a lot of big fancy houses in one place, is just how gullible people who might otherwise be perfectly intelligent, can be.
a smart person with a lot of money lives in a little shack with a big yard with a train in the back, and or a vegetable garden or an orchard.
and a long way from anywhere to commute to, because if they're that smart, they wouldn't have to.
nor would they be conned into giving a shit about trying to impress anyone with what they can afford to buy.
a drug kingpin or pimp might want to live in a mcmansion, or someone who was well off in another country, and recently immigrated from one to another,
and has an incomplete understanding of local customs.
some people want a big house so they can invite a lot of people to big parties. to each their own.
some think they can buy lots of friends that way.
if they think that's important, to each their own, i guess.
