So, in a high school not too far from Pittsburgh today a "shy 16 year old sophmore" went nuts and started stabbing people left and right in the hallways of his high school. He ended up being tackled to the ground by the principal and various other people I believe.

As far as I know there are no deaths yet but there are people who were seriously wounded and in critical condition. There were either 19 or 22 people stabbed (hearing both).

Here's a link to one of the stories about it.
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/04/09/pa-school-stabbings/7498911/

I do seem to be hearing more and more stories of mass stabbings lately. Luckily this was one that may have been non-fatal. I guess that is one difference than if it was a gun, but it does also show, on the other side, that if someone is determined to do damage, they'll do it with or without a gun. So, on both sides of the gun control argument an argument could be made.

Well if he wasn't being bullied or physically/sexually abused he was probably on some type of medication which altered his brain chemistry to the detriment of his classmates turning him homicidal/suicidal

A 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy was charged Wednesday evening with two dozen felony counts after 20 students and a security guard were stabbed at a suburban Pittsburgh high school.

The boy, identified as Alex Hribal, a sophomore at Franklin Senior Regional High School in Murrysville, was held without bail on 21 counts of aggravated assault and four counts of criminal attempt to commit a specific crime, as well as a count of carrying a prohibited weapon.

Hribal was well-known to many at Franklin High, who called him a good student — certainly not someone you would expect to go off violently.
"I don't know what could possibly motivate him to do it," Shane Molyneaux told NBC News in an email interview.

"He was somewhat friendly. He was very smart," Molyneaux said. "He was not bullied and he did not seem like a mean kid. He did have friends."

But for some reason, he left the home he's lived in since he was 2 years old Wednesday morning — and arrived at school with two straight knives about 8 to 10 inches long, authorities allege.

Not necessarily, some people do like the appeal in america of being glamorized after doing something like this, he most likely does have underlying mental illness' but he coulda done this without any drug, clear minded

Yea, I believe that antidepressants in teenagers ....along with some adhd meds can cause some teens to react like this. In addition to the things you mentioned-abuse, bullying and tramatic things like this.

I know a couple other posts accidentally got deleted by a mod.- in any case, one of those posts was where I commented that I'll be interested to see how much cnn covers this considering there really an agenda that can be followed (that I can figure) w this and also because cnn can not break from their plane coverage...

As to something hotwater posted it's interesting how people always say they don't expect this particular kid to flip like this..

THAT'S another thing... you know how you hear less and less about each mass public attack? But there are more of them?
I think the more people keep hearing about them...and hearing about them...some disturbed people who want the attention are gonna start to get ideas and I do think that's some of what is going on.

Why don't all high schools have metal detectors and someone checking in students at each building entrance? It appears that more needs to be done in today's world to secure the students and staff. Nowadays you never know when someone has snapped putting your children at risk wondering if you'll get to see your kid again at the end of every school day. Precautionary measures need to be made asap, not after people have been shot, stabbed, or pronounced dead murdered in class.

Girl...from where I'm sitting I agree with you. Sitting here 4.5 months pregnant with a 3 year old... debating whether to homeschool...
The town I live in now there was a 12 or 13 year old boy who shot the principal and then himself before school in the cafeteria-where the students gathered before home room. (I went to that school... there were a lot of bullies there and the principal... same one...turned a blind eye back then... but still, yea...sigh)...

Cpl years after that at an elementary school in this school district a man came into the school w a machete and sliced a few people.

I try to tell myself lightening doesn't strike twice in the same place.

I have no idea if I can continue staying at home (full time, you know, financially) to home school two kids. I have no idea if I trust sending them to school...and the time to find out is creeping up. Ticking. Ticking. Ticking.

I bet it was anti-depressants and other prescription drugs that he didn't need to be on. Teenagers are naturally angsty and bitter little shits who hate everything, no need to give them a drug to combat their natural instincts. Because you wind up fucking them up even more. Place the blame on the drug companies and those evil psychiatrists who work for them.

Was it confirmed he was on drugs illegal or prescription?

I get the feeling we are assuming things here.

I also want to say that teenagers are badly stereotyped as "naughty miscreants" and that's not always the case.

They should have metal detectors is all I'm gonna say.

But compare this to Sandy Hook, notice we are talking about injuries rather than 26 fatalities.

To those who have debated me in the past about guns and violence versus another type of weapon and violence in this same kind of crime scene, I think my arguments win.

You will need to start somewhere else. If you need armed guards and metal detectors in schools some serious mistakes have already been made somewhere else.

You’re right we’re presupposing he's another teenage pharmaceutical company lab rat whose was driven to suicide and murder. He could just be a sociopath, some kid who played one too many video games, or he’s just looking for some notoriety as a copycat - but it's not likely.

To be honest, I'm not surprised anymore.
It's like....every week we hear about similar killings and incidents in American schools.
You don't hear about things like that happening in German or French schools for example.
It's interesting actually. I wonder why it's so often in USA.

It is because of Americas media propaganda. The stats show that EVERY day in some country in the world there is somebody either stabbed or shot in school or an incident that requires the school on total lockdown.

This is everyday in the world, not just once a month in america

Metal detectors wont do a thing!!
The person will simply go somewhere else, the mall, the movies, maybe the school football game...?

If you want a metal detector in ONE spot, you will need them EVERYWHERE or else they are a pointless peice of machinery that was pointless money wasted.

Do you happen to know if those other countries have large amounts of teenagers that are prescribed antidepressants and also ADD/ADHD medications?

It could, of course, be something in the American culture. But I also am wondering about the rx rates in the US compared to other countries.

How in the hell does 1 kid stab 20 people without anyone stopping him? Serious? It's a knife... Not a gun... I was expecting 3-4 people tops, 20!? What the fuck, what were these people doing? You know how hard it would be to stab 20 people in a crowded building without being stopped? As fucked up as this kid is, he has talent... lol

Most of these kind of stories may come from USA but not only. In fact I recall an incident at a german school right away. Looked for it and found this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:School_shootings_in_Germany

Seems 3 of those 4 killing sprees where committed by students of those schools. I bet there is more to be found, and not only in USA or Germany ;) :(
