So it seems that car accidents are about to be a thing of the past... and potentially traffic jams as well. Thoughts on this? http://gigaom.com/2014/02/03/the-ne...-idea-it-will-be-mandated-in-future-vehicles/
car accidents terrify me. I have lost a lot of people in my life due to car accidents. I am okay with this.
Cars are just gonna get more expensive...and what about collision insurance? Who'll need it, right? And how long till they legislate all the cars without "autonomous driving technologies" off the road? I wish they would focus on technology more toward public transportation instead of individual drivers. And BTW fuck google
some jackass hacker will figure out a way to slow everyone down and make them pull to the right so they can speed past
Great, even more people living. We need a predator that targets humans to keep the population in check, cars sort of filled that gap, but now what?
we tried that but it doesnt work because the people that really need it the most are too lazy to use it.
I think that's right. Hopefully, the reduction in insurance will balance the extra costs. A system like this might not cost much. I don't think it will have radar. It's really just like a wifi network feeding a good computer algorithm. So many people are unaware that self-driving cars are coming within 15 years.
I picture it being sort of like what they had in Minority Report... really small 'pod' like cars that are a lot cheaper. That way, everyone in your family can afford one. If it's all automated, they can profit by selling them to younger people because they wouldn't need to learn how to drive. It's sort of like how in the past every family had one computer, but now each person in the family needs a smartphone or tablet... they're selling 4 cheaper products instead of one more expensive one, and as a result their profits are through the roof. The old cars will be outdated by then anyways... I think we're talking about at least 20 years in the future. Fuel efficiency alone would probably make up the cost of switching. They've already made smaller cars that are easier to maneuver, quieter, have lower emissions and run on batteries. I would worry about the insurance companies but if there's a government mandate there's not a lot they can do... except push people to vote for the Republicans.
Look at the way they sell cars now and tell me people are going to want something as impersonal as a tiny pod car. How will that reflect/ re-enforce their personal idea of lifestyle? lol Doesn't sound much different from riding a train or shuttle, except you would be responsible for the maintenance. But you could have your own cup holder and bumber stickers lol Hey I drive a twenty year old car man! At 190,000 miles it still gets 40-45 miles per gallon. Not bad for a 600$ used car. Well it may change, but right now...http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/05/b...off-owners-must-wait.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
I don't think they should all be equipped with a kill switch that is in control of the authorities. I think it superior not to drive as driving takes time away from where I am. Automated transportation of goods, amazon drones?, seems to be a helpful idea at for those who have a lot of shit to move around across the countryside.
Umm...what the fuck are our blinkers and brake lights for??? This is going to cause people to pay less attention, and trust their car to tell them if any hazards presents themselves. In my mind completely counterproductive. I don't like it and won't own a car who has it.
A tiny pod car would not be able to get through the deep snow I drove through this morning unless it could levitate. I don't think I could trust cars talking to eachother. Reminds me of the movie 2001. "Open the pod bay doors Hal".
People tend to want what other people want/have. Marketing is mostly about targeting the early adopters and then letting everyone else catch up. It's not a sure thing, of course... but if the price is right and the look is right, I think it's possible. A lot of things that people would have thought absurd have caught on in the past! I don't think they would all be pods but I think we'll end up seeing more of them... I mean, they could be driving this!: http://www.gizmag.com/elio-motors-84-mpg-three-wheeler/27454/ And for $7k new? That's pretty much amazing. It's not exactly the same as an iPhone but it's a step towards the multiple-car family thing I was talking about. Ownership is a big plus... it would be different because you would be going straight to your destination as opposed to making a lot of stops... and they would be more efficient at getting there than a non-automated car. Well, ideally fossil fuels would be phased out completely as technology improves... or at least kept to the barest minimum. I agree that we're not there now and even the electric cars use power from coal plants. Also: http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/167897-for-sure-self-driving-cars-by-2020 A child of 10 could drive a car in the 2020s!
I agree with Gongshaman, I wish there would be more investment in improving public transportation and cycling infrastructure in urban centres instead of focussing so much money and brain-power on individual vehicles. But that probably won't happen because there is not as much money to be made.
