I bought a Spinners record at a sunday school jumble sale when I was 8. When I came home and told my mum and my gran there was laughter, as I presented to the them The Spinners. Can't remember what album it was. Country folk music with a good heart and a belly of ale is always welcome here as long as the grass grows wild.
Old Rockers still Rockin' - here's an interesting interview from April from Mr Sweeney this year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xuAigMl1I4
Best gig I saw while in Manchester was the fall, probably the youngest person in the crowd, being around 21. Everyone told me that judging by the last sets that he'd played, Mark probably wasn't gonna bother coming on stage, he'd just stay in the wings and shout. Anyway, he did stumble out, and it was sick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpWVk3h2SA8 Not exactly classic, but this was always on when I was a young warthog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1XalWiJt6g
I love The Fall but I wasn't into them when I lived in Manchester. It was all Oasis and all that. I remember them being mentioned and played, but they weren't the golden hour. Least be said, in the context of memories of Levenshulme I claim the right to be a true fan. They are possibly not only the best Manchester band that ever was, but could be lo-fi experimental early punk wave. M E Smith nailed it. The number of times they played Edinburgh recently and I didn't go and see them. It's shocking is what it is.
I lived in Manchester for about 3 years (university) and before I went somehow the Fall became symbolic of Manchester music in general for me, rather than bigger bands or any of the Madchestery stuff, So I had to see 'em first chance I got, preferably in a basement (which is where they played). I dunno why, really. I heard the track blindness and thought "this is fucking heavier than any metal I've ever heard" Speaking of Oasis, I've just remembered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSLPbl8Nigk This is the first pop/rock track I ever remember hearing. I'm not huge into Oasis now (although I'll still sing along when it comes on) but my entire interest in music in general probably started with hearing this track and wanting to find out who played it. My main memory of music in Manchester was going down to Vinyl valley to pick up records. I was that student prick who kept insisting to his friends that vinyl was soo much better than Mp3, even though I played everything on a £50 potato system, and wouldn't have known quality audio if it had bitten me on the arse.
With respect:- Can we keep to Greater * (see initial post) Manchester bands please - otherwise this will become a 'Northern' acts thread - and not what it was intended to be, that being: - One that recognises the acts from the (Greater) Manchester area Thanks
Mint Royale - Don't know a lot about them but love this little toe-tapper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8vMeMVk5R0
