I suspect that the horrible repercussions of this disaster will never go away. The epic mishandling of the plant in the first place, followed by the chronic mismanagement of the events, from the attempt to cover up what was actually happening and the scale of the catastrophe in which local firefighters were sent in to "put out a fire" without being told that they were going to be fried. Its disgusting and disturbing.
There is a huge project going on to try to contain and make the place safe and a fascinating article on the BBC news site here:

Quoted as being one of the biggest engineering projects in history it is likely to also be one of the most expensive. It is being funded by a consortium of 40 western countries, with donations from many others including some middle eastern countries.
So it admirable and surprising that there is so much international co-operation going on, and money being donated.
But why is that? Not entirely altruistic surely? Are we all afraid that this colossal goat-fuck out in the desert has to be contained once and for all as it will continue to have effects on the world otherwise?

It is my understanding that Russia is rolling in money from the selling of oil, gas , minerals and god knows what else. There are more billionaires in Russia than anywhere else. They certainly have Europe over a barrel as we buy all our gas from them. Putin could pay for this whole thing with his pocket money. So why is he not? Why can we not tell the **** to stump up and sort out his mess? Because we have no leverage over him?
Is this a Ukraine thing then? Because thats where Chernobyl is and Russia will not help Ukraine -- I really want to know. In fact Putin is set to demand 20bn from them over land and debt disputes, so I guess he is not about to lift a finger to help them when he just wants to thoroughly fuck them.
So, why is this not a Russian problem anymore?

Is that area really worth repopulating? Seems like a crazy expensive project, and the funds could be used on something more productively humanitarian.

I heard that in about 300 years or so, the radioactivity levels would be little to nonexistant enough to inhabit that area without radiation meters and gas masks.

300 Years ?!? = So Tragic - and what's worse is that we never seem to pay heed to history and only a matter of time before it happens again - if it hasn't already, and BB has kept it silent!
