What do you mean I couldn't know what? What the hell does that mean?

I know 3voor12 pretty well I'll have you know, all I know about spotify is that people keep telling to use it. But I don't need to because this site in Holland lets me listen to about 100 new albums a month for free online and I'm discovering an epic new band every three days.

Pejorative form of 'you'. Means "a person".

    Use your context clues.

And that's pretty much why I said that it had been used as a promoting tool before the ipod ad.

Before this popular music or mainstream wasn't used as a tool in and of itself. Music was used to market and music was created for consumption, they were still separate entities. The iPod ad blurred the lines and today there really is no distinct difference between the 2.

Today songs often become hits after being used as marketing tools but before they get any kind of major exposure.

    Think of it this way.

Now we have iPods. imagine if it was the 80's again and you have to record a record onto a tape so you could listen to it outside your house.

Be grateful for small mercedes benzes.

Spotify isn't bad. Access and share your music from anywhere.
As more and more users jump on, the database will grow and the variety of music you can access will mushroom even more than it already has.

I was very surprised to find more of the obscure artists I like.

At the same time, people didn't get sued for sharing mix tapes.

I don't have anything against the iPod. But, Apple is in my top 10 list of evil companies which is a whole other matter.

Besides, it's not the iPod that makes music portable, it's the MP3.

I'm not saying spotify is is bad, I've never tried it. Maybe I'm missing out, but like I say 3voor12 is all I need, and in a way I like it because it's Dutch and more independent. Occasionally find gems on there you just wont find anywhere else. Like for instant Milligram Retreat or Passarella Death Squad or Aux Raus or Madensuyu, Robert Hood. there's a few off the top of my head. Heard of any of them?

    Rep for Plastikman- Good call.

Had a big hit in the mid 90's that got waaaaay overplayed in the clubs. I liked the song at first but now I hate it.

    No idea. Youtube me.

    All around in the 80s.

Though alkaline battery MP3 players do suck.

Sorry if anyone has posted any of the following bands, I skipped about six pages becasue I was sick of people bitching about modern music. Honestly why do a bunch of peeps on a hippie care abut mainstream? Mainstream music can suck my balls. Music's only bad when you don't take the time to listen to it

Spend a little less time bitchin and some more time listening. Here are a few Australian bands

Seems to me that what you've been sucessful at pointing out isn't so much that Modern Music itself sucks so much as Modern Societies tastes have changed for what many here will likely see (and rightly so) as for the worst. Opting for hollow, flavorless music simply for the sake it has a catchy beat the sheeple can dance to.

You yourself point out there are doubtlessly many fine examples of skilled musicians around, and that it's merely the Charts which we find are lacking in anything of substance. Keep in mind the charts are built on either listener preference or corporate sponsorship. One encouraging us all to march along and be happy consumers and the other showing just how effective their campaign has been over the past 20 or 30 years.

    :cheers2:

(Yes, I relate everything to Orwell and Huxley... But only because it's so easy to. :D )
