There has always been terrible music, but there are periods when there isn't that much good music. Like now. Pick me out an artist from the last ten years that can rival the creative geniuses of the artists from the sixties, or the seventies, or the eighties. Even the nineties had some good talent around in the form of grunge. I never really liked grunge, but I admit that there were some creative geniuses in the genre. Where is the genius of now?
We're talking about MAINSTREAM music here. In the sixties, the beatles were the biggest band on earth. Led Zeppelin were the biggest of the seventies. Yes, I am aware that along with them were was some crap. Maybe even mostly crap. But I look at the charts today and I see NOTHING but crap. With hindsight, we look back on the sixties and seventies and we filter out the bad and see only the good. In 40 years time when people look back on the noughties, will there be any good to see?
exactly.. The shit just didnt stand the test of time. I think a few bands from this decade will last. Muse, modest mouse and radiohead come to mind.. I dont know if they count as genius.. but I think they´ll last. But if we´re talking about the charts.. yeah, 99% is shit.
Yes, but Modest Mouse was formed in 1993, Muse was formed in 1994 and Radiohead was formed way back in 1985. Is there any band formed in the noughties that you can think of that will stand the test of time? Because I can't think of any.
Kind of ironic that in order to make your point you posted a song from an individual who made it in the early 90s as opposed to ... the last ten years.
The Black Keys, hopefully https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shM3Nm-wRrs"]YouTube - The Black Keys - Heavy Soul‏ Most modern bands worth standing the test of time probably aren't famous enough to =/
These guys are pretty good.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmZexg8sxyk"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmZexg8sxyk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp2D_RVhoEM"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp2D_RVhoEM
Bleh, I hate MGMT Scissor Sisters are much better, one of their inspirations, and also from the noughties: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSbBFy-KNI"]YouTube - Scissor Sisters Lights‏
I feel music started down falling once people thought it was a good idea to use more synths and electronic mixers than actual instruments. Listen to any "alternative" station these days and even every song on there sounds the fucking same.
I should add, most music coming out is no longer timeless like classics from the 60s and 70s, even 80s.
I bet you would've been one of those people back in the day who hated The Rolling Stones but loved The Beatles or something like that. Scissor Sisters are not what I would describe as a really popular band for one and their sound is quite a bit different overall from what i've heard, although I can see some parallels with Electric Feel and the Scissor Sisters sound.
Quit whining, there's loads of great music coming out these days. Maybe you are just looking in the wrong place. I have discovered more epic music in the past few years than in my whole life.
The Beatles suck. (Though they were great writers, they couldn't perform their own music) The Rolling Stones are pretty decent; but I much prefer Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mich and Tich, the Association, Velvet Underground And though most of those are later 60s, I suppose of the earlier 60s I would say Motown would be my preference. I wouldn't describe the Scissor Sisters as popular either, I don't know why you would assume I would. Their sound is (typically) much more reminiscent of disco and always more focused. The reason I don't like MGMT is because their work often has too much going on and is sort've all over the place.
The way I see it is that the artists of today think that they need to overload their songs with effects and synths etc.. It's all just too electric. A musician should be able to create good music with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, their voice and their own song writing skill. For example: (I picked out the Beatles because of the "Beatles suck" comment) https://www.youtube.com/embed/P5CUHHGlQg0 That song is nothing more than good lyrics, good vocals and a good guitar part (And the blackbird sound of course). But it’s a brilliant song. But then they could use their effects to create something like this: http://youtu.be/rTMOSCh7aJU Again, a brilliant song. For some reason artists today seem to think that they HAVE to overload their songs with weird effects, predictable chord sequences and auto-tuned vocals. Where has the soul gone? Where is the sense of adventure? (Again, this thread is about mainstream music. I'm sure all of you will be able to find some obscure but incredibly talented band that defies what I've just said.)
