I find some of Aphex's stuff a bit crazy, darker stuff especially but I can't say I've listened to much. Lovin' Windowlicker though.

Just been looking into other IDM artists, there's some pretty sweet stuff out there.

For IDM check out Luke vibert AKA wagon christ. go goes by both aliases.

he makes some amazing trip hop and to me personally is the best sampler and best user of the roland tb-303 (ACID!!)

also check out 'bogdan raczynski' 'autechre' 'squarepusher' 'the flashbulb'.

here is some truly amazing aphex masterpieces

Yeah, "My Girls" is superb. I'm positive the end of the video is meant to symbolize ego death. The concept goes hand-in-hand with the lyrics.

You should check out the video they made for "Brothersport". Really channels the psychedelic and hippie vibes in the music:

Aphex Twin's videos are pretty messed up, and I can't say I'm a fan of them. I don't like the track "Come to Daddy", either, and he himself admitted it was intended as a crappy joke. The vocals just don't do it for me.

Aphex Twin is the pioneer of IDM, though. He started making music as a young teen in the 80's. He definitely has a lot of amazing tracks that cover a wide variety of moods and different electronic styles. He actually has releases under several aliases, and his catalogue is HUGE!

He even wrote a few classical pieces, too. "Avril 14th" has gotten a lot of attention.

What a bunch of infantile crappola...

are there any electronic artists making music that actually goes somewhere, ya know, makes like, anything resembling a musical statement?

...Or is it all just a bunch of cheap effects and generic drum patches?

I gotta tell ya, Mainsteam's not lookin' too bad by comparison...

No need to reply, just thinking out loud.

    Carry on.

So what's your view on classical music then? Does a song need lyrics to make a statement, whaaat? I bet half the songs you sing along to if you read the lyrics you'd realise.. oh shit i was singing the wrong words.

It's nice to be able to produce a whole song yourself without needing to learn multiple instruments to record each piece of music and put it all together or find a band or whatever...

This is the future my friend, i love the innovation and completely new sounds coming out.

You mean music from the classical era, or just orchestral music in general? Music from the classical era I find boring as fuck, but there is a lot of orchestral music I do enjoy and respect. I couldn't care less about lyrics or lyrical content. ( I'm not dismissing clever songwriting)
When I sing along with something (rarely) I don't care if the words are correct.
It's more about the melody and syllabic cadence.

Yes the technology's a fucking miracle. I use it myself so I know how the shit works.(one day I may post some of my electronic compositions) But it takes a lot of time and effort to tweak all the parameters to make a composition sound like human music and not machine made.
On the other hand it's way too easy to just click stock sounds, effects, beats, and what-not, have the machine sync it for you, click the arpeggiator or what ever and go...
You know what they say; put a monkey in front of a grand piano, will you get music?

It's been the future for quite sometime my friend. Most folks have yet to catch up with the innovations of 'Modern music' (also an era) made over 100 years ago! ( Bartok, Stravinsky, Webern, Varese, etc...)

I got sick and tired when I was younger of the music being churned out In what I considered music factories. I was Into heavy rock when In my twenties. DEEP PURPLE/LED ZEPPELIN/SABBATH. then the eighties came along and all the crap that entailed with what I called ladyboy music. then one day In 1988 I tuned Into Classic FM by "accident" It was playing Mars from Holsts planet suite. I have been hooked ever since. even now as I type this Im listening to Classic FM
I sold all my LPs and tapes and replaced them with Vivaldi Bach Beethoven Schubert. go on give classical a go. you never know you might like It.
I have listened to classical music that has made me cry. and stirred me to action
Classical music has everything.....the music today. what can I say. gangsta rap whats that supposed to do for the spirit. It encourages people to be violent all about guns knives and bodybags,

Haha, I can see where you're coming from, but this is the difference between mainstream and "underground"? music, it's open to debate because people have varying tastes.

Put it this way... Think of Aphex and all the rest of the decent IDM artists as Picasso. Before he went abstract his paintings were insanely realistic and traditional. Then he went all childish and made shit that I don't really like..
They have the talent but put it out in a different way, because writing or playing normal stuff doesn't do it for them anymore.
That's my take on it anyway.

They're brilliant! That was the first album I ever had, my mom got it for me for my 5th birthday and surprisingly I haven't lost it yet :p

Aphex Twin actually has built his own instruments and written his own software to generate those electronic sounds. Certainly not some cheaply put together crap. And he actually has composed a few classical pieces on traditional instruments. He's incredibly well-versed when it comes to music. Big influence on Radiohead, too.

Agreed. And I'm someone who is mainly a 60's/70's guy, so that's saying something.
