I still get Mojo nearly every month. Also "Private Eye" which is a twice-monthly British satirical and political paper in magazine format.I'll also pick up any science magazine if it looks interesting.I still think magazines have their place.A lot of the information on the internet is of poor quality and I think magazines offer a good focal point for sharing information.I also don't like the current obligation to be constantly online to do everything and I think magazines offer a a worthwhile challenge to that to some extent.
I can enjoy a good quality magazine when I happen to stumble upon it somewhere else (coffeeshop or indeed waiting room) but I would never buy them anymore. I bought a dutch music magazine very frequently years ago and also have read Mojo regularly. The point with Mojo is I don't care for 80% of the music they talk about, so I rather go to blogs or websites that focus on my particular thing and don't cost me a cent. Last time I was in a waitingroom there were lots of gossip magazines so I went with the Donald Duck. Also thought it lost some quality over the years
Is it just us getting older you think or does the Donald Duck lose some quality? I thought the colouring looked just too digital and sucky and even thought the storylines in my youth were slightly less generic.
I never really looked at it that good to notice any quality loss. I always thought storylines were predictable and kinda similar, but somehow it was still usually amusing. I especially loved the corny wordjokes and the play with names. Boer de Rij and Peter Selie are some of the ones I clearly remember.
alan moore and various friends in northhampton make a magazine called dodgem logic. its supposed to be reminiscent of the underground mags of the 70's, its just a really eclectic mix of articles, artwork, how-to stuff and just generally interesting people writing interesting stuff about whatever they like (regular contributions from comics like josie long, graham lineham did a good article for it once, and the gay pride issue featured an article by Britain's first openly gay teacher) alongside crazy psychedelic bullshit. takes a lot of influence from the anarchy comics project gilbert shelton did, both in visual style and occasionally subject matter. i've got a copy here, a few things outta the index to give you an idea; an article on the history of the anarchy movement by alan moore regular feature on guerilla gardening feature article on Burlesque performance article on unexplained/paranormal stories of northhamptonshire article on post-civilised theory various pieces of artwork and comics by NH peeps this issue came with a free mini comic book written (and drawn) by alan moore: astro-dick, the adventures of an anthropomorphic penis in space. this is a really early issue, and theres not that much in it, tbh, the mags been getting thicker and thicker with more and more cool shit (especially artwork) filling the pages. big reccomend, i've not bought one in ages, i hope they're still doing them. i also have a "sight and sound" subscription and if i'm ever in town and bored, i'll pick up a copy of fangoria, rue morgue or the fortean times to read on the bus and then stick in the bog occasionally i read a magazine called "its fate!" with my friends for shits and giggles, its a paranormal magazine for "spiritual" people, with articles like "my goldfish is possessed by the ghost of a traffic warden" and suchlike.
