the book M*A*S*H was written before vietnam and the TV series started after or at the end of the war ..it started in the fall of 73 .the movie was filmed in 1970 but the movie is true to the book which was started back in the early 60s or late 50s

M*A*S*H is my favorite show. However, I am depressed that I have seen all episodes now, because I find I watch it less than I used to since nothing about it is new anymore.
I agree, that the series seemed to deal a lot with the Vietnam War type stuff too. But look at it, the wars were basically the same: Both were over a country divided over communism, both took place in the same general region of asia, both were draft wars, etc. A lot of people didn't protest wars before vietnam though.
Historically though, wasn't Korea the last war that actually had M*A*S*H units? I know they hat battalions and hospitals and stuff, but did they actually use M*A*S*H units after that? I could be wrong...

But the show was very figuartive in the issues it confronted. In that tone of figuratism, it doesn't have to be EXACTLY the same to be figuarative.

The movie is also good. But as someone else mentioned, they both have to be appreciated in seperate ways. Just like American Grafiti and the spin off TV show Happy Days (if you like either one... I did when I was a lot younger but don't care for them anymore...)

Mash was a good show-it really had an antiwar theme to it and was done during Vietnam. In many ways it probably was intended to capitalize on the antiwar sentiment of the time. It's interesting how TV series that were on during Vietnam never dealt with Vietnam directly-Gomer Pyle was on for years at the height of the war and it was as if the war didn't exist-and we're talking about Marines, really the first to go there anyway. You would think a show about Marines that was set in that time period would have mentioned the war-they were all stateside and no plans to ship them anywhere. Anyway, I had always had a crush on Nurse Kelly, the heavyset Hawaiian nurse on M*A*S*H-I thought she was a real dish. Nurse Kelly, if you're out there, you're the girl!

Even though I'm a HUGE fan of this show (especially the seasons with Major Charles Winchester), I STILL haven't seen the last episode! I guess I'll have to rent it.

    I hear it's VERY powerful.

Ashleigh is sitting next to me. She likes M*A*S*H. I like M*A*S*H. She is telling me about a supposed spin off (very short lived) called "W*A*L*T*E*R. Anyone else heard anything about it? Frank was awesome. As was Klinger. Hehehe. He eats jeeps.

I must agree with LOVE FEST1969! The early years were the best, when Alan Alda took control, it went down hill!

Plus you got to love the character of Frank Burns!

The very first episode of M*A*S*H will be on at 5pm and again at 11pm the early episodes are so important because they have Trapper (Wayne Rogers) and Henry (McLean Stevenson) in them. Wayne and McLean were only on M*A*S*H for the first three seasons after that they left because it became The Alan Alda Show and they were not getting any good lines and Trapper was being treated as Hawkeye's sidekick and not his partner in crime. I always will love M*A*S*H but after Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson left the show it got a little too serious for it's own good and it became kinda lame, but these are the episodes we should cherish because this may be the last time The Hallmark Channel shows every single episode of the show. If you cried on Friday because of the last episode then your heart will break when the episode where Henry dies, but that won't happen for a couple of months. I've seen every single episode several times over but the first three seasons always puts a smile on your face and tugs at your heart. So watch M*A*S*H even if you have never seen an episode before believe me you won't regret it, help support the greatest show of all times.
