How do you spend your lunch break at work? Go out, eat at desk, or 'lunch is for wimps'? They say getting away from your desk is the best idea, otherwise it doesn't really feel like a break. I'm at home wasting time on the interwebs. It's been raining all day here, so a slow day at work for a gardener.
the only place i've ever had a desk job, had a break room with a microwave and a fridge. long time ago, on the railroad, maintenance of way crews would heat tacos (or whatever else you brought to cook) over a fire of discarded ties. (kind of like a barbique, except burning creosote doesn't smell quiet as good) always preferred my own 'brown bag' to fast food joints. occasionally, a crew of us would fast food together. going out for lunch, if you've only got a half hour and don't have a car, isn't very practical. also not good for digestion health to eat and run. working the dish room in fine food restaurants, which was most of what i did after i was no longer with the railroad, it was a matter of what you were allowed to raid from the walk in. retired now. i get up from the computer, make something myself, cook it in the microwave and eat it at my works station which is my only clear table, the other one is covered by a model railroad. well there's a little bit of a countertop next to the micro, but not really any place to sit next to it. eating out, even at micdog's is pushing my pension a wee bit, plus i prefer my own cooking anyway.
I don't really have a structured break. I take my break whenever and for as long as I want. I don't have anyone watching over me. As long as I get my work done, I could take a five hour break if I wanted (as long as I stayed on the premises). But that would be boring.
I don't work behind a desk but if I would I would definitely not sit there also at lunch. Most of the time I bring my own lunch. Go out buying it only on occasion.
Same here, and, God I love having that kind of freedom at work. That being said... 99% of the time I eat lunch, it's at my desk, usually while dicking around on Hip Forums.
i definitely don't stay in the office. These fluorescent lights hurt my eyes (and my soul). I either bring my lunch and eat outside at a picnic table or go pick it up somewhere and eat in my car. and if the weather's pleasant I just walk around for an hour to let off some steam.
I only get a 1/2 lunch so i don't much time to leave, i just go outside where the smoking benches are and puff my lunch away.
my job I was lucky to have catering at lunch at concert setups and film shoots....I would always be at the front of the line so I would have time sneak away for a doob too.....I am guessing I smoked a doob at lunch minimum 3 out of 5 lunches over my career.....often I would have to sleep on my lunch too because we were on long setups
When I worked on the docks there was a break room where I ate what I brought. A half hour. When I worked various construction jobs I sat in the shade and ate what I brought. A half hour. When I worked in a motorcycle shop it varied. Sometimes I would go to a local diner to two friends. They bought their lunch and I ate what I brought. The diner was nice enough to excuse my brown bag. A half hour. Other times we'd all go down over the hill behind the shop, smoke a few joints and eat our lunches. Or eat our lunches and then go in the compressor room and smoke a few joints. When I taught, I ate what I brought at my desk and read a book at the same time, or taught myself various computer programs, as we always had to learn them ourselves. Then I did various other tasks that I would never have time for otherwise after I finished eating. Fixing machines, prepping materials, making phone calls, tracking down principals or guidance counselor's, etc. I think it was 40 minutes. There was a year when they introduced an unlimited salad bar in the cafeteria for like a buck fifty, or something. That was bad. They had everything you could think of, hard boiled eggs, vegetables, cheese, olives, croutons, etc. It was an outside vendor who thought they'd make money doing this. Silly people. I'd eat so much I'd have trouble staying awake for the rest of the day. They stopped that after a very short while.
Sometimes I go for a walk, other times I will go outside in the garden area and eat. If the weather is really hot or smokey i'll just eat in the office.
I brought in lamps for my office. I never turn on the overhead fluorescent lights. My coworkers all make fun of me, call me a vampire, because I'm always in low light (don't have a window either )but I absolutely abhor fluorescent lighting.
Haha i don't blame you at all. I always feel slightly hungover at the end of the day from staring at a computer under fluorescent lighting. Not a good feeling. I dont have a window either - i read about a study not long ago that indicated office workers who sit by windows have lower rates of depression than office workers who dont. I believe it
I have two jobs. One place I work is a cafe, so I eat lunch there. Sometimes people buy me lunch. My other job I can leave any time. There's plenty of places to eat around here, so I kind of switch it up day to day. I like to bring my food home and waste some time online while I eat.
I used to work in a place that not only had windows, but you could open them. They didn't even have screens. I had a third-story office overlooking a park and in the spring and late summer/fall when it wasn't cold nor oppressively hot outside, I would open my window. You could hear birds chirping, and of course the hustle and bustle noise of city life in the background. It was nice though. I could spend eight hours a day in an office and still manage to be connected to the outside world; now I'm just doing hard time in solitary
The nicest lunch time I have had was getting sent to Kauai from Oahu with a bunch of other ner'do well roofers and at lunch, the place where we all were staying would set up a big all -you -could gag down table, right on the beach. Very pleasant.
I skip my 30min lunches. When I think about spending an extra 2.5 hours a week, 10 hours a month, 120 hours a year ...at work, when I could be home spending that time... makes me cringe.
