I like power metal a lot better than death metal. operatic vocals. thats what its all about, imo. Metal can be incredibly musical, and people who deny this are not being very wise. There is a potentially entertaining song in any genre. In holding the belief that some music is actually 'good' or 'bad', people tend to base their judgements of good or bad music as to what sounds best to them. psychedelics definately make it clear how much our point of view affects our perception and judgements. in seeking trully good music, we should look outside of ourselves, and not at what sounds good to ourselves but what music can make the most humans move their feet .

Opeth and Job For a Cowboy being trotted out to defend metal? That's not right. Well, maybe some Opeth (anything off Orchid or My Arms, Your Hearse), but JFAC are imitators and really, citing them as an example works in favor of mindsets like Vance's. Burzum, Drudkh, Enslaved. Metal is art, I almost don't even feel the need to argue that. But I'm bored so I'll try, but I don't care enough to make the following especially coherent or accessible.

Death Metal is an artform. The crude subject matter, the intense instrumentation, the growled vocals. It's all meant to make a statement. Of course, the genre is over two decades old now, and the statement has been made so many times most of its original power has been lost. But the likes of Deicide, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Hellhammer and Suffocation made music that discussed and confronted death and our fear of it. By doing so, it was a direct challenge to humanity and modern society. Morality and religion were under attack, and it probed the psyche by exposing it to a degree of horror most people's imaginations never come within an imaginary mile of.

The other genres of extreme metal had similar agendas, although they differed in many important ways. While Death Metal was mostly about tearing down and destroying the current social order, Black Metal is about how to replace it (for the most part). Of course, every statement I'm making is a general one, and not every band in a given genre is going to fit into the agenda. For instance, Venom--a seminal Black Metal band--made music that was mostly about destroying and had very little to do with rebuilding. Although that may be the forte of Death Metal, the attitude presented in Venom was and is very much in line with Black Metal. Some people will tell you that Venom wasn't Black Metal, but these people do not know what they are talking about.

The artistry doesn't end at extreme metal either. It goes all the way back to the beginning, when Black Sabbath channeled dark forces with their self titled song, and forced the listener to confront the evil that exists both within the world and within themselves.

In short, metal is art, music is art, and claiming that something isn't art just because you don't like it is retarded.

I love listening to Between The Buried And Me when I trip. I cant do it on the come up though cause it just makes things so intense. During the Peak bring it on. I will do anything including going through a haunted house while I am peaking. Cause its easier to control in my opinion.

Back on topic. Death metal is definitely something that is an acquired taste. Think of it like free form paintings almost. Some people say that there is no creativity but others dig the fuck out of it. 'ya know?

I can respect that some people don't like it. Thats all fine and dandy but to say that its not art is completely close-minded.

they are really techinical, which is what gives you such crazy closed eye visuals. But they are bearable b/c their vocals aren't ridiculous.

That's what I dont like about death metal. It seems like a contest as to who can sound most similarly to satan, and it's just way over the top.

jfacb isn't the most metal band. but I like their guitar and vocals (plus there the only band I could find with a decent sounding video where the bass and drums didn't override everything else lol).

but I loved your post. metal is truley an art form. an art that makes you confront life and not hide. I just wonder if metal can go any further than it already has. it seems like it has been pushed to its very ends, can it get any heavier, deeper, and faster?

I forgot to mention what I listen to when I trip (not LSD, but in general)

Psyopus. Short for Psychotic Opus. Schizophrenic distorted, classical-esque tech metal!
Converge - very respected metalcore band. Their artwork is fucking awesome too, search "Converge Jane Doe" or "Converge No Heroes" in google images.
Acacia Strain - deathcore? I hate fusing genres like that, but it fits them. Their oldest CD is more technical, and they never play those songs at shows with their current lineup. Their newer stuff is really fucking insanely heavy metal/death/core/whatever.

meshuggah and gojira... psychedelic metal... purely ! personally I have lost the path of death metal... only being able to listen to progressive stuff as of late.. Opeth and.. uh.. well.. thats about it I guess and Gojira occasionally... while tripping ?? that would freak me right out. but anyone who listens to the bands mentioned and cant find artistic value is a complete MORON.. Meshuggah.. wow.. not art.. LOL !! Opeth ?? you gotta be kidding me.. the took rock and roll farther than ANYONE !!! Get stoned and watch Lamentations WOW double WOW !! try and play that shit.. try to arrange some music like that I FUCKING DARE YOU !! cannibal corpse on the other hand.. eh.. poop.

but check out... Gorod, Trepalium, Symbiosis, Cryopsis, Alarum, Neuraxis, Winds, Fredrik Thordenals Special Defects.... and then some Dark DnB.. Hive, Evol Intent, Spor, Ewun, Fresh, Gein, Limewax... man that shit changed my life !!

I totally understand. When I think of acid I don't think of peace of mind. Acid is everything. If it's a key to understanding then it's not about understanding only certain things. If you haven't experienced every emotion on acid it's not a trip (IMO). So when you talk about acid and aggression I understand.

For me it doesn't even have to be violent aggression. It just has to be the external flow of extreme energy.

Not all metal is "pure fucking agression". Expressions like that are what twist peoples view of the art. :(

Also to captain-voyage 34, cannibal corpse has one of the most technical guitar solos ever recorded. The whole "kill kill kill" thing may not be for everyone, but any lover of metal should appreciate an accomplishment like that.

i say it really depends on what song and band it is. a lot of death metal these days is a just a bunch of screams and thrown together guitar riffs. but some is real death metal with real melodies. if your listen to some shit, youll be able to tell how shitty it really is, but if you listen to something good, you will realize musical genious that is put behind it.

the lyrics may not be aggressive (which very few metal bands don't have them...nile...) but the music is pure fucking aggression. but this is death metal, not progressive we're talking about.

Well damn vance you are one close minded person. I think if you are a person who loves metal you will love tripping to it. If your a person who doesnt then I bet it will scare you or make you uncomfortable. But as a fan I find it amazing. Driving out in the country while listening to Opeth was fucking amazing. It gives you a completely different experience then when listening to other music. There are countless genre's that you can listen to and feel the same effect, they groove the same, make you feel the same. They arent the same music but still similar. No genre's really replicate real metal. If your an actual metal fan listening to hardcore is not the same. Rock comes nowhere close. It is definitely a must try. And vance you should try not to be so close minded. Just because you dont understand something doesnt mean its attomatically bad. Saying an entire genre of music is nothing is as ignorant a statement as can be made. I wouldnt expect someone so close minded in a forum like talking about LSD to be honest.
