Love the Coopers Movie Blurb by Shale November 13, 2015 I got a free movie pass but could not use it with the latest Bond movie, so I opted for this one. I'm not really into these Xmas holiday movies, especially when the are playing in November, but it was the only movie that interested me at all this weekend. Like all the previous Xmas movies, (This Christmas 2007 & Nothing Like the Holidays 2008) this one involves a big family with discord among its members going to the obligatory Xmas dinner together. The family is gathering at Mom & Dad's place, Sam & Charlotte Cooper (John Goodman & Diane Keaton). Charlotte & Sam Among the kids is Hank (Ed Helms) divorced dad who hasn't told everyone that he is out of work. Eleanor (Olivia Wilde) an outspoken wanna be writer who is tired of her mother's disapproval of her not settling down. She meets a soldier (Jake Lacy) stranded in the airport due to a bad snowstorm and even tho he is totally wrong for her, (She's Lib he's Right Wing Conservative) convinces him to go to the dinner posing as her boyfriend. Eleanor & "Boyfriend" Also at the dinner will be Charlotte's dad, Bucky (Alan Arkin) who is bringing Ruby (Amanda Seyfried) a waitress whom he has befriended at a local diner. Bucky & Ruby Then there is Charlotte's little sister Emma (Marisa Tomei), who has issues from childhood and gets busted for shoplifting on Xmas Eve and tries to get Officer Williams (Anthony Mackie) to show mercy and let her go as she is being taken in cuffs to lockup. So, there is the dysfunctional set of characters in this family - where even mom & pop haven't told anyone that they are thinking of splitting up. Family Gathering After Dinner This movie was not well liked by the aggregate critics on Rotten Tomatoes who gave it a 19% fresh and was liked by only 55% of audiences. The consensus was: "Love the Coopers has a talented cast and a uniquely bittersweet blend of holiday cheer in its better moments, but they're all let down by a script content to settle for cloying smarm." On the other hand, critic Walter Addiego said: "An exceptional cast and a few on-target punch lines are the positives for 'Love the Coopers,' an otherwise pedestrian holiday comedy about a dysfunctional family. It's part sitcom and part soap opera that pokes mild fun at the season but has a wide sentimental streak" I enjoyed many of the jokes and flash back sequences of how this family came to be and came to be dysfunctional. I think a lot of ppl who get into the Holiday Spirit would enjoy this movie. I live alone, hundreds of miles from relatives and movies like this make me appreciate that. Also, I like going to the beach on Xmas day, not trudging thru freezing Pittsburgh snow, which was the last place I lived in the winter before going to Costa Rica in January 1975.
