    Am I the only one who listens to Animal Collective here? To me they're the best current psychedelic band out there right now. (Besides Grizzly Bear, which are more of a blend of genres.). Like seriously on par with any 60's classics, and I feel like they're really pioneering music.

    Get blitzed, then listen to these masterpieces: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nagI_slIviA"]Animal Collective | Merriweather Post Pavilion - YouTube

    Hey well, I did this and I guess I have to dissappoint you :p Would you say these albums aren't a blend of genres? I do not enjoy this kind of psychedelic music at all. I have to admit I'm not the most fond of experimental pioneering where it comes to psych though. I rather have a band like öresund Space Collective or Siena root (who sound rather unique despite forcing new boundaries) or Tia Carrera just do their thing. Although these Animal collective albums you posted sound very psychedelic it doesn't sound like groovy music to me. Good psychedelic does both in my book :p Some great psychedelic stuff can even do without all the weird digital sounds and space bleeps. It would be the music being experienced as psychedelic rather than make it sound psychedelic with such elements. Not to say I don't like the cliché digital effects and space bleeps of course!

    The psychedellic music scene is starting to come back in a pretty big way really, getting in to everywhere!

    Favourite type of stuff coming about at the moment though is Psychedelic Drone sort of stuff, some incredible bands coming about;

    (Not sure how to Imbed a Youtube video, if anyone could help me out or link me to a help thread I'd be really grateful!!)

    This is a band called Cosmic Dead, they're doing some pretty far out stuff, practically MADE, note for note, for tripping! This is a full live gig, sound qualities good;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_F415ni9YM

    This is Gnod, they're doing pretty big things aswell in the Psychedellic scene. The band lives out in this farm type place in the middle of no where and host happenings, reminicent of the 60's, for anyone to attend;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZdNnvlbby0

    Also, White Hills, they're the band out of these three that are starting to make the most headway in terms of fanbase, they've done a collaberation album with Gnod too, which is my favourite album of this Genre, so heres a song from that album and one of there own too;

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aWPioxR0TM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChARPluyy8k

    And finally, for some more conventional psychedellic (if that isn't oxymoronic) stuff, I would DEFINATELY recomend Warpaint. All female psychedellic band, that make some pretty amazing songs!

    Hope anyone who's bothered enjoys!

    The tracks you posted are really good. In fact, I'm surprised. All new underground psych I've had prior to this just ... didn't sound psychedelic and wasn't really good. So thanks for sharing. Good to hear bands who know what's up.

    But they also have a familiar sound. So I can see why you wouldn't enjoy psych that's more like 60's era Floyd or the Collective. I mean, I love all types of psych. I really dig bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, Jefferson Airplane, early Grateful Dead, Country Joe & the Fish, The Byrds, etc. Trust me. But I love intense, in-your-face, studio-layered psychedelic music, too. That's what initially attracted me to the genre.

    And to each his own, I guess, but those Animal Collective albums are VERY groovy to me. "Merriweather Post Pavilion" has very hippie-like lyrics about anti-materialism, enjoying life's simplicities and not judging others. How can you listen to a song like "Taste" and not call that groovy? ("Am I really all the things that are outside of me?") Amazing to hear when blitzed or tripping. And "Strawberry Jam" deals with themes about childhood, and the frustrations that come in having to grow up and give up one's childlike tendencies. I don't just enjoy them for the sound but the lyrics, too.

    Grizzly Bear are a blend of chamber pop, baroque pop, indie rock and folk all mixed through a beautiful psychedelic center. Animal Collective have definitely been a multi-genre band, but they are more straight-up pure psych IMO on Strawberry Jam and MPP. I love both bands just as much, but just making a point. (Sometimes this type of discussion makes me want to throw all genres out the door, though. haha If I enjoy it, that's all that matters. :p )

    Yeah, I really can't stand most indie/alternative psych to put it roughly. I tried enough to make that judgement (but not all of course). It's subjective of course. For instance, I also never digged Tool which is a band lots of psych lovers seem to like.
    About the grooviness, I did not ment it lyricwise, I solely ment the groove of the sound. In fact, if a sound does not appeal to me I have a hard time focussing on the lyrics (perhaps this also has slightly to do with the fact english isn't my first language ;)).
    Where it comes to studio layered psychedelic music I must say nothing beats the reggae dub genre for me (lately at least). Especially since all that roots shit also rambles about evil babylon all the time, so it is kinda anti-establishment as well. I have to admit I'm not really looking for hippie lyrics in psychedelic music though. I prefer just good music that I experience as psychedelic. When it is hard to avoid that experience (like with bands as Pink Floyd, Hawkwind or Animal Collective for example :D) all the better :p

    I don't like Tool, either. Not my thing at all. I think they fall more under alternative metal and progressive.

    Personally, I feel the grooviness in terms of sound in Animal Collective's music. To me their sound is very evocative of 60's psychedelia like Syd Barrett-era Floyd, which is what initially got me really hooked to them. Very rich bass, too. Although to be honest, I didn't like them when I first heard them. But at some point down the line I listened to them, and things just *clicked*. I guess this also coincided with some of my mind-altering experiences.

    Reggae is legit, too. Don't mean to sound like a stereotype, though, in saying that the reggae I'm most familiar with is Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.

    Dub techno, that's a great genre too. It's instrumental. Pretty much a mix of ambient and dub. Echoey reverberating chords with slow beats. Perfect to kick back to.

    Don't mean to be getting off track on this thread, though.

    Exactly the same as reggae dub! :2thumbsup: I know exactly what you mean with that "click", everybody starts with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, me too. I didn't dig reggae and dub at all back then but somehow there was a click many years later and I'm really into it now (especially 70's roots reggae dub).

    Technically you're not getting off track with dub techno at all since this thread is about modern artists making psychedelic music :D

    I thought you liked all things psychedelic :mickey: but I understand what you mean :p

    I've never heard it called that. Most people call it "dub techno". Deepchord presents Echospace - "The Coldest Season" is a masterpiece. Dub techno fits more under the electronic section, although it's definitely something to listen to while blazed or on psych's.

    Just because certain people like psychedelics and listen to Tool, that doesn't make their music psychedelic. And progressive music doesn't automatically mean psychedelic.

    When it comes to psychedelic rock, I'm mainly a late 60's/early 70's guy. But Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear have been incredible exceptions. Oh, and I like some psytrance/Goa trance as well, but I'm not as familiar with it nor as into it as I think I should be.

    I thought they were considered psychedelic music, at least because of some of their lyrics and their artwork of course. By the way, just because a genres name doesn't contain the word psychedelic doesn't mean it isn't psychedelic ;)
    I'm really selective where it comes to psytrance, when we're talking modern psychedelic I'm mainly in the stoner rock and space rock which I generally consider to be the modern equivalent of 60/70's psych. I don't like indie, alternative rock in general and the psychy folk stuff like freak folk or new weird america is not spend well on me neither. On the other hand: the 60's/70's psychedelic folk is really my cup of tea.
