When I was a kid, I used to love rap/hip hop. Now I can't stand it (at least what I see on MTV, etc). Seems so egotistical, blah, blah, blah. I need the names of a few good artists that you can recommend to get me back into the groove.

The artists that I have so far:
    Talib Kweli
    KRS-One & BDP
    Mos Def
    Digable Planets
    De La Soul
    Digital Underground
    Dead Prez
    Biz Markie
    etc.

Please help. Love the conscious music/beats, can't stand the bullshit!

lol, i'm hardly someone to consult about hiphop, but if you are after something a little less blinged up than the typical crap, there are some great kiwi bands that i guess you could term as hip hop. They are kind of hip hop but with a more mellow, pacific flavour.

so, yeah, if it sounds at all intersting, check out bands/artists like
    King Kapisi
    Che Fu and the Crates
    Nesian Mystik

Immortal Technique- not the greatest music but he's anti-bush so who cares? :) and Guru's solo stuff, its really chilled. Kind of jazz influencesd hip hop. You got a good few lists to keep you entertained for a while hehe.

ohhhhh and Pete Rock, Kool Keith and some of Outkast's older stuff. Enjoy!

pop onto Amazon.com and use their soundbites and suggestions to your advantage. Don't have to buy from there, just "window shop"

What about Common (Sense). He's one of my favs. Along with Jeru the Damaja and Hemisphere.

I'm sure that you won't be dissapointed with any of those three artists/groups.
