Actually I have period duct tape (it's plaid and available from L.L.Bean!) but I pride myself on my carpentry skills and it wasn't needed this time.

The big one in the pics is poplar and pine. The khana weighs around 100 pounds, compression ring about 20, the rafters about 2 pounds each. Maybe 10 pounds of canvas. So about 180-200 pounds.

The new one is smaller, all oak but the khana slats will be quartersawn (3/8" instead of 3/4") yet oak is much heavier so I'm figuring 150 pounds.

Cool yurt dude. Me I lived in a friends teepee for a while. But it was not in good shape. But it was WAY cool. You can get new teepees from several different manufacturers if you google it. Or check out the classifieds at Mother Earth News. They got ads for Yurts, Teepees and a canvas dome home by Pacific Domes. The canvas dome is the one I would pick if I had some land and the cash. They are designed to handle heavy snow loads and good ventilation options in warmer weather.
Plus the struts are able to handle hooking up a hammock from any spot.
Barring the cash, some homeless people and I set up a large yurt type structure by cutting off a tree and cutting off smaller trees slightly shorter around the center one. We lashed and nailed supports from the center out and then covered the structure with what we could scrounge. It was warm and cozy with just a small fire in the center. We had 5 adults and 3 kids in there till we got raided by the cops. The made us take it down. I may do a similar but better type home in the future. I would definitely check out the ads in Mother if I were you. Lots of good ideas if nothing else.

    Peace, Cricket

Thanks! I used to get the Mother Earth News years ago. I should get a new subscription. Great source.

Ohh, lookit all the yurts! I fell in love with the concept after a trip to Colorado 4 years ago. There's an awesome 4-season yurt in Crestone, CO... it looks like they finished the exterior with adobe? VERY cool! The rounds walls have always fascinated me, but fitting furniture in & making it look right has always seemed like a huge issue to me.

"Period" duct tape - now I think I've heard it all ;) My husband & I are planning to build an early Irish Traveller wagon within the next few years - to camp in at our own Renaissance Faire and maybe SOMEDAY (when the kids are grown) to take to Pennsic.
    love,
    mom

I thought celtgrrl and I were the only people on HF who went to Pennsic! Come see us in the bog, in the Dalhradia camp!
