Listening in on your kid's phone calls illegal, WA courts rule

That is ironic you mention that because that is what happens. When the child meets a pedophile and gets raped and murdered everyone will be looking at the parents saying "what the fuck is wrong with you, why didn't you know what your child is doing, you should have picked up that phone".

Regarding this particular incident that Ellis posted about, I agree with the decision, as this was not just a parent looking out for her child. I do believe that teens and children should have some rights, but at the same time it is the responsibility of the parent to guide that child on the way. Sometimes you have to be sneaky. Sometimes you children will come to you. Personally, I think the government should stay out of parenting issues, unless absolutely necessary in order to protect a child.

This reminds me of when we used to talk about weed on the phone. We used to call it George, just in case someone was listening. It was innocent sounding enough, "is George coming to the movies". Honestly, I just think kids are getting dumber and parents end up paying for it.

 

hmmm.. if i had a child, a little 14 year old at that, and she was on the phone with a guy who was a suspect in a crime, i think i'd be concerned too. i would of course hope to have the kind of rapport with my daughter that i could just ask her what was said and not have to listen in, but you know, this isn't like the mom just picked up the phone to hear if her daughter was having sex or sneaking out at night, she was checking to see if her daughter's friend was a criminal.

itchy subject, i'm not really sure. i know my mom would have never done that, but i also know she knows i wouldn't have been hanging out with too many petty thieves

 

Note, they weren't trying to say that the parent's would be charged with anything, just that the converstation and fruits of it can not be used as court evidence...parent's shouldn't go narcing on their kids to the cops anyway, or their kids friends!

 

i find it strange that its illegal for parents to listen in on phone calls...but now thanks to the patriot act our government can.
