Not sure what you're saying you did exactly but an OS startup disk would require booting from that disk in order to at least get familiar with the system.
Then most would also have the option of install as an option.
If you have a bootable disc when you see a message such as " press any key to boot " act immediately while message is displayed. Your computer is searching for boot info and will proceed to search for other boot options such as what may already be on your hard drive.

Best advice after a quick search I can give having no experience or even knowledge of Linux cd's is during the first loading screen, press F12. Which is supposedly the boot options screen (though it may vary) command and then you probably want to run it without installing to avoid potentially changing or deleting parts of your current OS.

Please list linux distro version and make and model of laptop.

It's probably black because it's still booting from the hard drive. You'll have to boot into your BIOS. It depends on you manufacturer what the button to do this is, but if you tell me the make and model of your laptop, I or just google it will tell you. F12, F10, and delete are good starts. Most make you hold this key at bootup rather than press it.

When you boot into BIOS there'll either be an option to boot from CD, or to rearrange the boot order. You'll want to put the cdrom as the first boot device. When you do that you'll be in.

Set the bios to boot from the cd/dvd drive . I down load the iso files and copy them to a usb memory and have the mch. boot from the usb . Most Linux distros will boot from a usb , but not all . Dvds/usb s are for sale from sites on distro watch , iso files can be down loaded off sites on distro watch ,
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.
Hear is the site for mint , I am using it as I make this post . Mint is easy to use , works fine , is free , and you can add lots of other programs .

    On a more serious note

He boight a startup CD on ebay?

Just dowload the iso, make up a usb startup, do 10 minutes of reading on how to do that.

Hes probably trying to load 64 bit on a 34 bit comp....
    Also a CD? Its 2019, not 2005

Correct except it takes too long to download 1.9GB so a DVD is more pragmatic.
