Life is pointless.. and that's the secret to it. If we understand this, we can then begin to deduce that there is nothing to worry about; we can not do anything "wrong". There is no failure, only living, whichever way we please. Do no harm, and otherwise do as you wish.
Life can be summed up in a bob dylan quote. "a successful man wakes up in the morning, goes to bed at night and does what he wants inbetween" That's really what life's all about.
Just because you don't believe something is possible doesn't make it impossible. Honestly, I don't think it's such a difficult concept to grasp. Although five years ago I would have refused to accept it.
The concept is easy. I think if we understood for real we wouldn't be here discussing it. Everyone's searching for something, everyone has an idea of right and wrong, good and bad. Believing in something else doesn't do shit.
The original post said that "life is pointless ... and that's the secret to it." Everybody is (or most people are) trying to understand why we are here and what the sense of life is. That's why religions were created: to cover up the painful truth that life has no sense in itself. The only sense it can have is the one that you personally give it. There is no such thing as a universal "right or wrong", there is only an individual "point of view". If you choose to believe that something is right for you, it will be that way ..... just not for everybody else. Whatever you choose to believe, in the end you will be going back to the dust you came from .... Just another useless cycle of life? Yes, unless you yourself give that short life meaning. The meaning YOU want. Nobody can understand this? I think every person can. The question is would they want to. It's not easy to live with the thought that it is all for nothing.
exactly, life literally has no sense at all, our whole earth even! If life on this planet just ended tomorrow, nothing would change.. time would keep on going, other planets, solar systems, everything.. would just keep on going. When we die, time just goes on and on, so why work our whole life to die for nothing? We should enjoy life instead of working, but if nobody worked there would be nothing to enjoy, except for nature of course.. but if everyone just suddenly stopped working now i mean, the world would be in complete chaos, i'm sure most of the worlds population would die. Which is why nothing will ever change, we cant just stop working, you said how the only sense life has is the sense we give it, over time we have made the point of life to work, and now it's just a little to late to change that...
Allright, maybe I should have been a bit clearer on this point. The OP stated that life is pointless. The conclusion that he/she draws is that because of this you can stop worrying and do whatever you like - unless you hurt someone in the process, of course. That is why I asked him/her what it was going to be and said that he/she couldn't have it both ways. I never said that I shared his/her opinion about not having to worry. My main point is that if life is (in an absolute sense) completely meaningless then it is up to you to give it a meaning - to have a purpose - in order not to go crazy under the weight of your new found wisdom. If you choose to believe that you don't have to worry about anything anymore, that will be YOUR lifestyle .... and it'll depend on you wether you can make it work.
What makes you think that if you find life completely meaningless you would go crazy? Personally, that would be a huge relief for me. I don't need to give life any meaning, I've already unwillingly inherited a whole culture of meaning I never wanted.
Maybe I misunderstood you somewhere? We're constantly bombarded with Meanings Of Life from birth, whether it is to "help people", "achieve progress", "do your best", "to be happy". Am I wrong?
Ok, maybe I get it .... but what you're saying there (and possibly what you meant in the post before) are not meanings that you yourself have chosen, but that have been "forced" on you by family, friends, society, mass media, whatever. You can obviously choose to adopt one (or more) of them. But you may as well make up your own, however weird, antisocial, nonconformist that might be. My point was that if you really do realize that YOUR PERSONAL LIFE has NO SENSE AT ALL WHATSOEVER and really accept and let it sink in that in the end it is all for NOTHING, it can be rather depressing - maybe too much so. That's why people turn to religion. They are being promised something beyond life.
Which is the very belief that you think "does something". Anything it does is in your head, which I think is what you are saying anyway.
We live in a material word. Some people enjoy their material things and view their body as a temple only to have their soul released in death. Some of us care nothing for material things and view our body as a prison. Their is such thing as some would say cancer of the mind, and a lot of people have it. The older you get the more you want to leave.
