Well, as a new comer to the thread I don't feel entitled to pick the topic of discussion; I was just hoping that there would be an existing discussion to which I could make a valuable contribution. Just start talking about something that interests you, and I will ask you interesting questions about it, and before you know it we will be having an interesting discussion. Okay, off you go.

    Well, firstly welcome to HIP.

Now I was discussing global warming with a friend of mine earlier today. I said our planet has experienced global warming centuries ago. I concluded with, what next?
    The Ice Age?

I have heard the argument that the planet has always undergone changes in climate as part of some natural cycle. I don't doubt that it has, but that is not an argument against the proposition that human activity is having a detrimental effect on the climate. I am assuming you are not a scientist with qualifications in the field, and I certainly am not, so just for the sake of being on the safe side I think it makes sense to take notice of the people who are qualified to have an educated opinion on the matter. If they are right and we ignore them, we have more to lose than if they are wrong and we ignore them.

True very true. It breaks my heart to see the Rain Forest being lost forever.

I try my best to think of ways to help. But it needs the World to listen, and WARS do not help!

So do I. I have cut down on my driving from 300 miles per week to just 10 miles per week. Admittedly that is because I retired last year and now the only thing I use my car for is to go to Tesco and back once a week, but the fact still remains. Perhaps that's what you could do; take early retirement.

  13. The business I work for developes and manufactures building envelope systems for structures that far exceed the insulation values of past materials and methods. We supply materials to LEED certified buildings that required less energy to heat and cool. It's exciting to be involved in"green construction".

I better wear my tin hat .

When it comes down to the environment ,what the earth is going through is happening. I dont dispute that . I dispute the cause . I believe much of the Global warming we see is a natural phenomenon possibly accelerated by man but not exclusively as some of these hypocritical environmentalists claim . The very same people who drive around in gas gusseling SUVs and the like telling us all we are all doomed and we should do something about it .

My argument is nobody mentioned environmental change or Global warming when we had the industrial revolution ,the 50s and 60s when we had steam trains fuel hungry V8 enginned cars and factories spewing out pollution .

The planet with the exception of countries like the USA , China and India probably enjoys better air quality now than it ever had. Thats because with the exception of those 3 named countries and you could possibly throw Russia in there too , others have made an effort and cleaned up their act.

Now the UK government for example did away with Nuclear Power Stations closed all our mines down in the Thatcher years and now we are despererate for energy .

And there answer is yep bring back the Nuclear Power stations . They themselves could be a massive risk to the environment should anything go wrong . Up in Cumbria they are going to open a new coal mine . What a U turn .

In a nutshell money talks and mans greed for wealth is what will destroy this planet .

  15. The USA has made a major turn about in air and water quality since the early 70"s. It's night and day between us and China / India.

The point I was making is mans greed for wealth will be the likely cause for the destruction of this planet and not Global Warming .There will always be those who will want to make money regardless of the cost to the planet.

In the UK a cycle a few years ago would cost you about £50 and now this because they are "good" for the planet .Mans greed :)

  17. Don't even get me started on bikes! I've got a friend that just spent about half a car on a bike. It's human nature to want better and better things, but in the end - they're just "things". Is it the junkie or the pusher the villian?

I'm sure it is, but I imagine you have to be involved in it to fully appreciate it.

  19. 99% of the folks that use the building will have no idea it's taking a lot less energy to keep it comfortable!
