There has been a kidnapping/murder in Kyrgyzstan. This one happened April 5th, but bride-kidnapping is commonplace and tradition in Kyrgyzstan and it's got me upset; not just for women, but for the safety of my girlfriend.

What could possess a young man to feel so entitled that he does that?! I understand cultural differences, and don't get me wrong - I value Islam. It is a wonderful religion, with love for God, and a beautiful and vibrant congregation who more than anything respect God! They love their children, are firmly devout, and most notably have a high regard for morals and values in all that they do! That's the stuff!

But this? This I do not understand. I don't care what kind of spin you put on it, it's a violation of human spirit. It's as basic as the right to free will.





The woman was murdered by her kidnapper in this case - strangled. That isn't part of the tradition. What a violent and terribly troubling practice! That is violence!

Kyrgyzstan has said it's against the law, but little is done to enforce it. I'm very worried about Kyrgyzstan and my gf.

This serves for me as a sobering reminder of the relative safety and equality I take for granted with regularity in my home.

 

Of course, you are Soul. Sadly in many countries females, are still thought of, as second-class citizens.

It's reality for them. I read stories. This was outlawed when they were a Soviet country. When they gained their independence, the tradition resurfaced as a cultural right. Marriage of course is a little different for Kyrgyzstan. But women are people - people like my girlfriend. They know they deserve freedom to choose who they marry!

It's awful.
