Sorry for not having paid attention the last couple of months, but what exactly IS a jam band? I always assumed it was a band that recorded their songs and played their gigs while just jamming a bit, as in improvising. But I really don't know other than what I thought could logically be a good description.
i dunno, im sure everyone has their slightly different variation on the deffinition of a jam band... mine would be bands that play long jams, obviously , usually do a fair share of covers, usually mellower music, nothing extremely hardcore, cept for those couple sets where the bands decide to just go all out... usually jam bands play more music than they actually sing... 20minutes of instrumentals with 5 minutes of vocals tossed inbetween... lot of improvising as well.... thats my tiny definition
umphrey's is great! hookah is great! moe and Sound Tribe Sector Nine and Particle and Robert Randolph and the Family band, Drive by Truckers, the Shantee, Yonder Mountain! Whoo-Hoo! AND A GREAT NEW ACT FROM SOUTHEAST OHIO - - Crackers and Jam!! yeah baby! I love me some jam bands! Fill out my survey on the jam band scene PLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE! Thanks
I'm a huge fan of local jam band stuff... The Ragbirds - a mix of Celtic, reggae, and bluegrass. The lead singer also plays the mandolin, djembe, harmonica, and fiddle...she's the most talented woman I've ever ran across Back Forty - mostly reggae and bluegrass. Their fiddle player is incredible! Rootstand - very reggae jam-bandy-ish The Intentions - straight reggae Glowb - bluegrass + reggae
Aha... well, I asked that because me and my little brother have a bit of black / death metal orientated "band" together in which he plays guitar and I play drums (on an electronic practising pad plugged into his amp). We record our songs in his bedroom using a microphone attached to a one-ear headphone, used for chatting, that lies on the floor between us. We improvise everything, not even general planning (the only thing we do beforehand is deciding at what speed we'll start the song) and neither of us knows how to play very well. We rarely pay attention to each other's playing. We're only with two of us and have only use only one take for a song, and since both are busy playing and we have no lyrics thought up beforehand we don't often sing (if we do we just grunt / shriek something). I guessed we might have been a bit of a jam band.
Fuck Panic, Dave, Cheese, Umphreys, these are all preppy "jambands" and I use that term very loosely! Check out... Sound Tribe Sector 9 Keller Williams Moe. Tea Leaf Green
I dunno man GD and Phish pretty much destroy all jam bands to have come since, but I heard Panic at bonnaroo and they sounded awesome... so why hate on them if they play good music? Moe. isn't all too intense if you ask me... A few jambands I like are gd, soulive, mmw, and the word...
Panic...Only people that listen to Panic think Dave Matthews is God! What the fuck, how can you even put Panic and Dave and Umphreys into the same thread as Grateful Dead, Phish, and Moe. Its people like this that are ruining the scene for the true heady people!
i just listened to this band Ebeneezer yesterday while searching for live music from Red Rocks on archive.org... they seemed pretty cool, check'em out.... Tea Leaf Green is another bad ass jam band, just checkin out umphreys for the first time... they're definately rockin
so i guess... you can only be truely heady if you goto a dead, phish or moe concert... wow... really narrows it down for the younger gen... they better hope moe. comes near their hometowns... otherwise they'll never be concidered "heady" im a huge dead fan... but there is light further down the tunnel as well All jam music is pretty heady IMHO.... stop acting like some kind of stuck up poser...
