My family did the whole egg dying thing today, and the egg hunt/basket thing tomorrow for my niece and nephew.

why is the easter bunny the mascot for easter?

 

It's a Western European custom and symbol of fertility (the coming of spring/vernal equinox), though traditionally, it's a hare, not a rabbit (somewhere along the line it became a rabbit, just as it became bilby in Australia)... merging with the egg dying, the colors being religious symbols, vernal renewal of life, and resurrection...

It's all ancient folklore and religious tradition, rather than being so vague, or rather, specific as to label portions of it pagan tradition...
