Besides the major browsers, do you know any lesser-known (not mainstream) browsers that have not been discontinued (yet)? I've checked out the list on Wikipedia, but I doubt that it contains all of them. The ones I've tried are Vivaldi, Waterfox and Maxthon. Can you think of any other that you want to recommend?

I don't know which one's are still supported. I've used Opera and Safari on my PC in the past. I've also used internet explorer, which I think has changed its name to Microsoft edge; that's still supported I know because every now and again I click something on my desktop or somewhere that will by default open in edge. I seem to remember eons ago when I was still in high school Netscape Navigator (I graduated in 1998).

    Tor Browser

It's useful for anonymity. However the way it's structured, it's likely to be slower at times than any of the mainstream browsers.

I used Brave for awhile, it's pretty decent. Safe-minded and built in ad-blocker. I ran into a few sites that it had issues with, but overall pretty good.

I'm pretty sure that Opera and Edge are considered mainstream browsers. Edge is Microsoft's default browser for Windows 10, and Opera is the third most popular browser after Firefox and Chrome (if we don't count the Chinese browser UC). :grimacing:

Netscape is the source for Firefox.
Netscape developed the Mozilla Application Suite. An experimental arm of the Mozilla Suite was named Phoenix as it arose from Netscape.
Then the name changed to Firebird and finally Mozilla Firefox.

Mozilla was the in-house name for Netscape, and was how Netscape identified itself to servers. Hence all the subsequent browsers using Mozilla in their name. The name was derived from Mosaic + Godzilla, since the developers thought it was the browser that would take over from Mosaic. And Mosaic was the very first graphic browser, back in the early 1990s, when the World Wide Web was just in its infancy.

And, yes, I remember using Mosaic when I first started doing web development work in 1995. I was blown away with how cool it was!

Is this something independent of TOR itself?

When most people talk about TOR, I think they are referring to TOR browser but I think technically one could use TOR software sans the browser.

I honestly wondered what happened to Netscape. I have a bit of nostalgia when I think of that little animated N when loading pages.

Edge is the most intrusive browser on the planet. Not only is it as slow as a snail while it is downloading rubbish to your computer, coupled with Windows 10, I get adverts from companies who's shops I can see from my window. On my laptop, they follow me around all day like a little dog.
I have completely deleted it from all of our computers.

Weird. I've never had that happen when using Edge. Where do these ads appear?
