i can't remember who said it... but someone famous did - they said "what makes a guitarist is how far they can get to trying to be like jimi hendrix". though not always true, it is relevant - many people adore hendrix and want to be like him!
personally, i think what makes a guitarist is all the music they like put together in one. like, i don't play in a funk band, but my love of funk is apparent in my playing quite often if you listen out for it

lenny was inspired by hendrix... but they are two different guitarists. lenny doesn't know his guitar as intimately as hendrix knew his. lenny just can't make it wail like hendrix did.

I don't think he's trying to downright copy Jimi Hendrix. He's just very inspired by him. So is Prince. I think I might see more similarities between Jimi and Prince. But, a LOT of people are inspired by him. I'm know he's the reason MANY people have (or at least tried to) learn guitar. Lenny, Prince, and Andre 3000 have all come out and said that they are fans of Jimi and that he is a huge influence.

Cody Chesnutt, on the other hand, is riding off main man Jimi a little too hard, but mainly style wise.

I think a lot of black men who pick up the guitar end up being compared to Jimi just becasue of the fact that they are black and holding guitars.

    Doubt it.

Kravitz is a no-talent sell out hack. Jimi would never be in some lame GAP commercial. No guitarist has even come close to Jimi in terms of both performing ability and guitar style.

just a shady shadow of a cultural icon, poorly translated by someone who desperately wants to be a cultural icon.

Not a big fan of Lenny's shit.

yheaaa this guy play the rock star...his life is a Movie for hollywood girls in search of the good old rock'n roll cliché...and MTV give us for our birthday a cliché gift called Kravitz...People who loved his music don't know a lot of things about rock'n roll...
I've got a Kravitz album :( ...his 1995 "Circus" (his less successfull commercially)
But i was 14 ...so i was learnin how to rock...
Some years ago i've heard "American Woman" in MTV and i was thinkin : " This is one of his best song! He can be talented!"
It' was a fuckin' joke 'cause "American Woman" is a reprise !
He's not a bad artist but ...but it makes me hungry that naive people thinks that he reprezent rock n roll...

Yes, I totally agree. It can be quite frusturating at times, all the conformists think new mainstream stuff is rock and roll.

Naive people= Ignorant, MTV watchin', American Eagle wearin', Conformists

    it makes me mad...

Dude, nobody is like Jimi Hendrix. And, most likely, no one will ever be like him.

I liked the first couple of his albums. But he's been basically making the same album over and over and over for the past 10 years.
He's nothing like Hendrix.. his style was never meant to be like Hendrix
He's one of the worst lyricists around... He used to be able to write a catchy hook (albeit really just re-worked 70's riffs) but his hook well ran dry a long time ago.

Dude... "California" is nothing but a few power chords... there's no quicker to way to show that you can't play guitar then by using power chords over and over and over..

Man... Although I am against comparing artists and would say everyone has their own unique style and all that jazz....
I am tired of people comparing krazitz to Hendrix. Hendrix had the kind of talent that comes along once every couple of decades. Lenny is a commercial spin off that wouldn't be able to identify talent and music if it walked up to him with a marching band and neon sign.

Yes, lenny knows which end to hold the guitar, he can play a few chords and string a few notes (even I can do that and I don't have the gall to say I 'play' the guitar.)
He is a modern day star... yes... created by the commercial machine.
If I am to compare his music to hendrix then he is as a colour by number is to a rembrant.
