another story! The Kingdom by the Sea by Paul Theroux -Penguin Books 1983 "After eleven years living as an American in London Paul Theroux set out to travel clockwise around the coast and find out what Britain and the British are really like. It was the summer of 1982. He stated that he was 'tired' of London...........tired of hunting for parking [in 1982 - yea gods!].........tired of scribbled on walls............the grey underwear on London clothes lines hanging limply under baggy clouds!" He had chosen to walk the entire coast of Britain and occasionally catch a bus or train! - he asserted ' I will try to walk as much as possible but would take a train if they were an interesting line or if the weather was bad' And so on May day in England 1982 he caught the 11.33' to Margate. The Falkland War was about to erupt but a small gang of skinheads brought alarm to the train carriage as they alighted at Margate to fight! He suggested that Margate had never been fashionable but somewhere were people went to get healthy and once were recommended to drink a pint of sea water to keep the bowels moving!! It wasn't far from London and so became the 'resort' for the 'cockneys' He had planned to stay at least one night but kept on walking - it didn't appeal!
At last my love has come along My lonely days are over and life is like a song, oh yeah At last the skies above are blue My heart was wrapped up clover the night I looked at you I found a dream that I could speak to A dream that I can call my own I found a thrill to press my cheek to A thrill I've never known, oh yeah You smiled, you smiled oh and then the spell was cast And here we are in Heaven For you are mine at last
