Ha ha ... OnlyOne, you have to be the best person to ever walk the face of this planet. You make my day, everyday. And I just wanted to say that I knew what he meant, about getting the history and all that ... but I just wanted to throw the point out there that there isn't a shirt you can put on and be a "hippie" it's more a mindset than anything. I didn't mean to offend anybody! :& sorry if I did. I agree with Acorn ... the beats really started a movment that blossemed into the "flower children". If you want a good idea of what that's about go to the library and pick up the book "On The Road" or "The Dharma Bums" by Jack Kerouac ... that will open your mind. Shine On.
A lot of the GI generation were forerunners of the counterculture. My mom and day who were born in the early 1900's had seen the country fall apart in the depression and had traveled more than their mom and dad as a result of WWII. They saw the failure of the old order and were of a generation that embraced populism and freethinking. They started everything from the beats to the hells angels. I think a lot of the more serious hippy movement flowed from their foundation.
