lol My camera is at least a decade old and it must have been made somewhere in Europe or the uk or somewhere outside the US because it came with the date settings like that - day/month/year. It was so weird to me at first, but that was so long ago now that I don't even think about it. That pic was taken May 8th. :D

i posted my trees earlier in this thread...

i also worked for 3 years in parks and rec. i know parks and rec motivations.

avoiding damage, and avoiding blowing your budget on paying someone to walk around trimming grass all day every other week.

    And on that limb
    There was a branch
    The prettiest branch
    That you ever did see
And the branch was on the limb,
And the limb was on the tree,
And the tree was in the ground
And the green grass grew all around, all around, and the green grass grew all around

We live in Western Washington State and climate, soil and native vegetation make expansive lawns a poor choice. Our backyard is native mosses and shrubs...that don’t require large amounts of water during the summer dry season, use of chemical fertilizers and weed killers, or frequent mowing in the spring. Many local soils are on the acid side....great for Douglas Fir, not so good for fescue.

    rosemarry, thyme and mint.
i grew up with acid soils and cley too, in the northern sierras, and snow a couple of times a year too. compost is really wonderful. and even mulch.

i've also lived in western washington, but didn't have a place for a garden there. i did in oregon though. and did in cali again when my wife was alive from the mid 90s to 2009.

potting soil, myracle grow, and those little six packs of starts, because the snails will eat five of them, but then the one that takes off, really takes off.

that is for starting, i make a hole beg enough, deep enough, and put potting soil (because i didn't have any room to compost. did a couple of other times though) in the bottom. next i little of the liquified myracle grow, then set the start down in and more potting soil to almost fill the hole, and another little spritz of myracle grow, and then just a little bit of the clay that was dug to make a sort of cap, but not compacted, on top. then water thoroughly but not over water for a week or two, then just leave it alone unless it gets too dry.

western washington and oregon are wonderful for almost never drying out.
yes it does take choosing species that are acid tolerant, or it helps, although enough companion plants of the right kind can turn it less acid.

also i liked the really miniature and microfloral perenials because they look natural next to the g-scale trains.
baby's breath, baby's tears and lissoms did just fine. and lavender too. season after season all by themselves.

i tried something i think it was called millers, because it liked the soil, but after the second season looked kind of crappy.

of course mint and rosemary are neither to scale and both want to take over the world, but their leaves are so useful.
and they're not as hard to keep trimmed as berry vines.

been ten years since i thought about this stuff, doubt i'll ever get a chance to do any of it again.
(never used 'weed killer' one. what's a weed? something that belongs there more then a lawn usually, unless its an invasive)

if i had the space i'd grow bamboo too. and berry vines and cherry, plum, fig, and lemons. whatever else might grow wild local to wherever i was.
had a couple of little pines that i kept deliberatly over-trimming to keep them kind of halfway bonasia'd, they blew in on the wind and started themselves, which i guess was no surprise.

This place isn't mine...I'm standing on the edge of the property where I feed the little cat colony. Fancy, who is on the grass, never wants to come and join the others eating...beside where I am. She (or he but probably she :) ) looks on at us as I look at her and want to pet her sooo bad. But she comes and eats when I begin to walk off. dagnabbit

i love feral cat colonies, and i don't blame them for not wanting to become too dependent on us.
whatever other creatures there happen to be i love seeing too.

funny you say that...there are a number of chickens (mostly several roosters...or crowing hens with a red thingie on their head and chin) have taken to joining us. I put out a couple of separate trays off to the side so they have something to work on beside where the cats are eating. For some reason their pecking in the cat's faces bothers them! ;)

She does appear to be wearing heels

Although I think Orison wears heels when mowing the lawn, so it is possible

    it helps aerate the soil.

i was really basing my observation on the fact that she's smack in the middle of the yard, yet all the grass is the same uncut height.
